{"id":37077,"date":"2024-05-15T19:51:02","date_gmt":"2024-05-15T17:51:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/42b36947-2358-4da3-b999-e492ca1b94b8"},"modified":"2024-05-15T21:39:22","modified_gmt":"2024-05-15T19:39:22","slug":"new-dna-evidence-confirms-presence-of-big-cat-in-british-countryside","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbccountryfile\/rss_feed\/new-dna-evidence-confirms-presence-of-big-cat-in-british-countryside\/","title":{"rendered":"New DNA evidence confirms presence of big cat in British countryside"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Could this be conclusive evidence that there are big cats roaming the British countryside? <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 15 May 2024 at 17:51 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p><strong>An undisclosed Cumbrian hill farm is the location for the first ever positive identification of big cat DNA taken from a carcass.<\/strong><\/p><p>In October last year, Cumbrian resident Sharon Larkin-Snowden came across the carcass and disturbed the animal that had been feeding on it.<\/p><p>Larkin-Snowden told big cat expert Rick Minter\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bigcatconversations.com\/ep110-panthera-cumbria-dna-developments\/\">Big Cat Conversations<\/a>\u00a0podcast that the carcass was clearly still fresh and that only some of the internal organs had been consumed.<\/p><p>\u201cTo my right, I saw something black running, and assumed it was a sheepdog,\u201d\u00a0she said.\u00a0\u201cThen I did a double take and realised it was a black cat. It ran towards a stone wall, stopped and then jumped the wall. It was big\u00a0\u2013\u00a0the size of a German shepherd dog.\u201d<\/p><p>Larkin-Snowden took swabs from the sheep\u2019s nose and back and front legs, and they were sent to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/warwick.ac.uk\/fac\/sci\/lifesci\/research\/archaeobotany\/ecological_forensics\/cats\/\">laboratory<\/a>\u00a0at the University of Warwick which specialises in testing for big cat DNA run by Prof Robin Allaby.<\/p><p>Allaby told BBC Countryfile Magazine they were able to make a positive identification of DNA belonging to a cat from the\u00a0<em>Panthera<\/em>\u00a0genus. This includes five species\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-lions\">lion<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/leopard-facts\">leopard<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-tigers\">tiger<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-jaguars\">jaguar<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-snow-leopards\">snow leopard<\/a>, but only two\u00a0\u2013\u00a0leopard and jaguar\u00a0\u2013\u00a0that have melanistic (black) forms as seen by Larkin-Snowden.\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/what-is-a-black-panther\">What is a black panther?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>The existence of non-native big cats such as leopards, but also others such as pumas, has long been held to be a reality by investigators such as Minter. He has received more than 1,000 eye witness accounts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-big-cats\">big cat<\/a> encounters and he says they come from all over the country.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/which-big-cat-has-the-strongest-bite\">Which big cat has the strongest bite?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>Asked why hard evidence of their existence such as dead bodies or scats never come to light, Minter said they do\u00a0\u2013\u00a0but that many people did not want to go public with them.<\/p><p>\u201cWhy would a private estate volunteer this information?\u201d\u00a0Minter said.\u00a0\u201cIf you are gamekeeper and you get one in your rifle scope, why would you release that to anyone? They are concerned about the consequences of revealing their locality.\u201d<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/big-cats-in-uk-countryside\">Are there big cats in the UK countryside?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>Minter added that it was relatively unusual for non-native big cats to predate sheep.
