They belong to the raptor family, defined by their talons and a hooked bill, and reside in almost every part of the UK, from the lowlands of southern England and the coasts of Wales, to the great ridges, mountains and islands of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/uk-travel\/holiday-ideas\/guide-to-scotlands-north-west-highlands-where-to-stay-places-to-visit-great-walks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scottish Highlands<\/a>.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-do-birds-of-prey-hover\">Why do birds of prey hover?<\/h2><p>Some birds of prey hover in the air above their hunting grounds to spot prey. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/where-to-see\/guide-to-kestrels-how-to-identify-and-where-to-see\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kestrels<\/a> are perhaps the best-known for hovering and can remain almost motionless in the air, with the slight tweak of a wing or tail to maintain their position. They use oncoming wind to provide them with uplift, meaning they don&#8217;t have to beat their wings.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"724\" height=\"483\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2018\/09\/GettyImages-471923793-644a99b.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16453\" style=\"width:838px;height:auto\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kestrels hover above fields and scrub to spot their prey\/Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-identify-birds-of-prey\">How to identify birds of prey<\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-osprey-pandion-haliaetus\">Osprey, <em>Pandion haliaetus<\/em><\/h3><p>Bigger than a buzzard, the osprey has pale underparts, long wingtip feathers and dark patches where the wings bend. It can be mistaken for a gull. In September, this raptor migrates to West Africa for the winter. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/birds\/marsh-harrier-guide-identification-distribution-and-where-to-see\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">marsh harrier<\/a> flies with its wings lifted up in an obvious \u2018V\u2019 shape, though this can be hard to see from below. Patrolling low over reedbeds, it keeps its head down to scan for prey. It is Britain&#8217;s most highly persecuted bird of prey for its perceived role in hunting grouse though it will take mammals or small birds as it hovers and quarters for prey low to the ground. The courtship display \u2013 known as a sky-dance \u2013 is a rare but magical spectacle of early spring. The female \u2013 known as a ring tale for the markings on her upper tail \u2013 is brown, the male a ghostly bluish grey. It wheels about in the air on broad wings, with its tail fanned out and wingtip feathers widely splayed. Eats birds, mammals and carrion.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1597\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2019\/08\/Buzzard-01ce06a-e1639750313347.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44335\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Buzzards are the commonest and most widespread birds of prey in the UK\/Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-honey-buzzard-pernis-apivorus\">Honey buzzard, <em>Pernis apivorus<\/em><\/h3><p>Another buzzard-sized hawk but not closely related, the honey buzzard migrates in small numbers (fewer than 100 pairs) to Britain&#8217;s forests every spring. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/peregrine-falcon-facts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">peregrine falcon<\/a> frequently soars with wings spread, but when hunting makes dramatic dives after prey. Eats medium-sized birds.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1597\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2019\/08\/Peregrine-30d94b8-e1639750353951.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44338\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Peregrines can reach speeds of 242 mph\/Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hobby-falco-subbuteo\">Hobby, <em>Falco subbuteo<\/em><\/h3><p>Looking like a giant swift, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/7-things-you-never-knew-about-the-hobby\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hobby<\/a> has very pointed, narrow, swept-back wings, heavily streaked underparts and red \u2018trousers\u2019. It seldom soars. Eats <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/insects-invertebrates\/dragonfly-and-damselfly-guide-common-species-in-britain-where-to-find-and-how-to-identify\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dragonflies<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/how-to-identify\/guide-swallows-how-to-identify-where-to-see-migration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">swallows<\/a> and martins.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3000\" height=\"2217\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2019\/08\/Hobby-5003835.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44336\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hobbys eat insects and small birds\/Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sparrowhawk-accipiter-nisus\">Sparrowhawk, <em>Accipiter nisus<\/em><\/h3><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/facts-about-sparrowhawk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sparrowhawk<\/a> has an extremely long tail and broad wings with long feathered wingtips like \u2018fingers\u2019. It hunts mainly at hedge-height, but also circles high in the sky. Female is much larger than male. It adopts a variety of flight styles, including fast pursuit, soaring in circles and hovering.
