From microscopic organisms that have survived mass extinctions to \u2018vampire\u2019 fish and a shark as long as a bus, there are plenty of weird and wonderful creatures to be found.<\/strong><\/p><p>Here is a list of our favourite most peculiarly interesting species:<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10-weirdest-animals\">10 weirdest animals<\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ocean-sunfish-mola-mola\">Ocean sunfish (<em>Mola mola<\/em>)<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The bizarre Mola Mola looks as if it&#8217;s missing half its body. Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>One of the heaviest bony fish &#8211; and one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/fish\/weirdest-fish\">weirdest fish<\/a> &#8211; in the world, the sunfish is an increasingly common sight around south and west coasts. They are slow swimmers with a rounded body, long, triangular fins and a peculiar, frill-shaped tail.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/marine-life\/sunfish-guide\">Sunfish<\/a> will lie flat on the surface to sunbathe and they primarily eat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/marine-life\/jellyfish-guide-uk\">jellyfish<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-basking-shark-cetorhinus-maximus\">Basking shark (<em>Cetorhinus maximus<\/em>)<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1792\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2020\/02\/Basking-shark-fe7ca22-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Basking Shark Underwater Feeding\" class=\"wp-image-51846\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Basking Shark feeding on plankton during the bloom in the Scottish waters off the Isle of Coll. Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The second largest fish in the world, growing to 11 metres in length and 5 tonnes in weight, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/swimming-with-basking-sharks-in-cornwall\">basking sharks<\/a> visit British waters in the summer. <\/p><p>Cruising slowly with mouths open (to filter-feed plankton) and dorsal fins breaking the surface, they pose no threat to people, but are endangered, so sightings should be treasured.<\/p><p>Our sister title BBC Wildlife Magazine named it one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/fish\/weirdest-sharks\">weirdest sharks in the world<\/a><\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ladybird-spider-eresus-sandaliatus\">Ladybird spider (<em>Eresus sandaliatus<\/em>)<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2087\" height=\"1436\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/06\/Ladybird-spider.jpeg\" alt=\"Ladybird spider\" class=\"wp-image-187544\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The ladybird spider was discovered on a Dorset heathland in 1980. Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>One of our rarest spiders and largely limited to Dorset heathland where they build silk-lined burrows complete with a canopy from which they ambush prey.<\/p><p>The larger female is black, while the male resembles a miniature soft toy with white rings on its legs and a red body with black, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/facts-about-ladybirds\">ladybird<\/a>-like spots.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reeves-muntjac-muntiacus-reevesi\">Reeves muntjac (<em>Muntiacus reevesi<\/em>)<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"724\" height=\"483\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2018\/09\/GettyImages-464801567-5f0d431.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12777\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This little deer&#8217;s size isn&#8217;t the only thing worth noting. Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>A small, secretive deer, increasingly widespread across England and Wales having been introduced from China in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century. <\/p><p>One of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/weird-animals\">world&#8217;s weirdest animals<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/insects-invertebrates\/guide-to-britains-slugs-and-snails-how-to-identify-common-species-and-protect-your-plants\">muntjac<\/a> males have short antlers, visible &#8216;V&#8217; shaped scent glands just below their eyes and pronounced upper canines that appear like tusks. They have a delicate, dainty gait and a haunting, strangled bark that echoes through their woodland home.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-slow-worm-anguis-fragilis\">Slow worm (<em>Anguis fragilis<\/em>)<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2761\" height=\"1839\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2023\/01\/Slow-worm-5b52fd1.jpg\" alt=\"Slow worm in the UK\" class=\"wp-image-134354\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This gentle animal is generally nocturnal and has a taste for slugs. Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Neither <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/insects-invertebrates\/earthworm-facts\">worm<\/a> nor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/british-snake-guide-how-to-identify-snakes-whether-theyre-dangerous-to-humans-and-where-they-live-in-the-uk\">snake<\/a>, but a legless <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/amphibians\/lizard-vs-newt-whats-the-difference\">lizard<\/a>, with a tail that it can \u2018drop\u2019 if attacked. <\/p><p>Slow worms grow to 50cm and are widespread, often found under logs or in rotting vegetation. <\/p><p>Their fondness for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/insects-invertebrates\/guide-to-britains-slugs-and-snails-how-to-identify-common-species-and-protect-your-plants\">slugs<\/a> makes them popular with gardeners, and they have extraordinary longevity, surviving more than 50 years in captivity.<\/p><ul><li>Find out more in our expert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/reptiles\">guide to reptiles<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sea-mouse-aphrodita-aculeata\">Sea mouse (<em>Aphrodita aculeata<\/em>)<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/06\/sea-mouse-1.jpg\" alt=\"sea mouse\" class=\"wp-image-186709\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">By MichaelMaggs &#8211; Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0\/ https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>A marine worm found all around our coast, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/sea-mouse-aphrodita-aculeata\">sea mouse<\/a> has long, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/difference-between-hair-and-fur\">fur<\/a>-like bristles known as <em>setae<\/em>, that change colour in response to the angle of light.<\/p><p>Measuring between 10 and 20cm long, they hunt small crabs and other worms, and their Latin name, <em>Aphrodita<\/em>, comes from their supposed similarity to female genitalia.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-spoonbill-platalea-leucorodia\">Spoonbill (<em>Platalea leucorodia<\/em>)<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/06\/spoon_bill.jpg\" alt=\"spoonbill\" class=\"wp-image-186645\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The spoonbill is found in small, but increasing, numbers around the coasts of England and Wales. Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>A large, mostly white bird, similar in appearance to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/birds\/guide-to-britains-herons-bitterns-and-cranes\">heron<\/a>, the spoonbill has an unmistakeable spatula-shaped bill. <\/p><p>It feeds by wading in shallow water and sweeping its bill side to side to catch fish, molluscs and crustaceans.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nightjar-caprimulgus-europaeus\">Nightjar (<em>Caprimulgus europaeus<\/em>)<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2172\" height=\"1380\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2020\/07\/GettyImages-1149469715-2aa8e14.jpg\" alt=\"weirdest animals Nightjar\" class=\"wp-image-62068\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A nocturnal, summer visitor to heathland and open forest where its churring call fills the night. Also known as water bears, the phylum of <em>Tardigrada<\/em> species have segmented bodies, eight legs and a straw-like mouthpiece.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/tardigrades-water-bears-guide\">Tardigrades<strong> <\/strong><\/a> can endure extreme temperature, dehydration and have even survived 10 days in space.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sea-lamprey-petromyzon-marinus\">Sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus)<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/06\/sea_lamprey.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-186651\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This horrifying mouth belongs to the sea lamprey. Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Growing over 1 metre long, this is the largest of three lamprey species in the British Isles. It is eel-like in appearance, with two rows of branchial &#8216;gills&#8217; and leathery, mottled brown skin.<\/p><p>The lamprey is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/parasites-guide\">parasite<\/a>, using rows of teeth in its circular, sucker-like mouth to attach to a host.
