Credit: RSPB<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>In May, the rare marsh fritillary flits between nectar-rich flowers, along with a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/insects-invertebrates\/dragonfly-and-damselfly-guide-common-species-in-britain-where-to-find-and-how-to-identify\">dragonflies and damselflies<\/a>: including the large red, azure, variable, blue-tailed and Irish damselflies, along with the hairy dragonfly and four-spotted chaser.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/07\/portmore_damselfly.jpg\" alt=\"blue tailed damselfly, Ischnura elegans,\" class=\"wp-image-188790\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A close up of a blue tailed damselfly, Ischnura elegans. Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>In June, another localised butterfly, cryptic wood white, frequents rough grassland, while scrutiny of the manifold dragonflies could reveal a fragile-looking Irish damselfly. Come July, star billing goes to Irish lady\u2019s-tresses, a delicate swirling, ivory orchid. <\/p><p>The last dragonfly species to appear up until late October are the black darter and the common darter. Once winter arrives, listen out for the honking whooper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/birds\/guide-to-britains-swans-species-identification-folklore-and-where-to-see-them\">swans<\/a> as they arrive in winter. Look out for buzzards and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/where-to-see\/guide-to-kestrels-how-to-identify-and-where-to-see\">kestrels<\/a> soaring overhead.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-portmore-lough\">Portmore Lough<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/07\/portmore.jpg\" alt=\"Portmore Lough.\" class=\"wp-image-188787\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">One of the hides at Portmore Lough. Credit: RSPB<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Portmore\u2019s spring air resounds with the territorial calls of breeding waders, for whose benefit wet grasslands are managed. Lapwings tumble through the air, calling out their country name \u2013 peewit! pee-wit! \u2013 while redshanks chivvy and snipes bleat. Tree sparrows peer nervously out of special nestboxes, while Irish hares scamper past as if late for a meeting. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/07\/portmore_lapwing.jpg\" alt=\"lapwing portmore lough\" class=\"wp-image-188792\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Visitors may be lucky enough to spot a lapwing at Portmore Lough. Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Summer brings lots of dragonflies and damselflies, which dart, chase and hawk as you zigzag down another boardwalk to reach a hide overlooking the water. Here <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/birds\/common-tern\">common terns<\/a> plungedive before returning to their chicks with a fish supper. <\/p><p>In winter, the lough fills with wildfowl. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/where-to-see\/duck-guide-britain-species-identification-facts\">Teal and tufted ducks<\/a> rub shoulders with two visitors from Iceland \u2013 whooper swans and greylag <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/how-to-identify\/guide-to-britains-geese-how-to-identify-and-where-to-see\">geese<\/a> \u2013 the latter compact, nervous birds quite unlike their raucous brethren.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-visitor-information-for-montiaghs-moss-and-portmore-lough\">Visitor information for Montiaghs Moss and Portmore Lough<\/h2><p>The lowland raised bog of Montiaghs Moss has recently been restored following 19th-century peat extraction.
