A veterinary surgeon explains everything you need to know<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/animals\/pets\/vets-warn-hot-ground-burns-pet-paws\">Vets warn hot ground burns pet paws<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/animals\/pets\/heatstroke-in-dogs\">How to keep your dog cool and prevent it getting heatstroke &#8211; which could be fatal.<\/a><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-keep-your-horse-cool-in-hot-weather\">How to keep your horse cool in hot weather<\/h2><p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>During hot weather spells,\u00a0a number of\u00a0steps need to be taken to ensure horses are kept comfortable and healthy,&#8221; says Gemma Stanford, Director of Horse Care and Welfare at The BHS. &#8220;Poor management can lead to lethargy, sunburn, dehydration and, in severe cases, heat stroke.&#8221;<\/p><p>It\u2019s important to increase your horse\u2019s water intake the same way we increase ours when it\u2019s hot. Water has a key role in your horse\u2019s digestive system, so providing plenty of clean, fresh water is a top priority.<\/p><p>Alongside this, it is important that shelter and shade is available in hot weather. If you have the facilities, stabling horses through the hottest parts of the day, providing their stable remains cool, is an option to consider.<\/p><p>The British Horse Society also advises that:<\/p><ul><li>Hosing or pouring with cold water can help horses to cool down in hot weather.<\/li><li>High-factor SPF sun cream is applied liberally to sensitive areas, including the nose.<\/li><li>Steps are taken to reduce your horses\u2019 exposure to flies.<\/li><li>Ride or exercise your horse when it is cooler, either early in the morning or late in the evening.<\/li><li>You\u00a0are able to\u00a0identify signs of heat-related illness.<\/li><\/ul><p>Here is further <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhs.org.uk\/about-us\/latest-news\/horses-need-sun-protection-too\">information and advice on exercising, travelling and competing in hot weather<\/a>. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-the-symptoms-of-heat-exhaustion-in-horses\">What are the symptoms of heat exhaustion in horses?<\/h2><p>Heat exhaustion is a serious condition and can occur if the horse is exposed\/exercised in very hot or humid conditions for long periods and is often also suffering from dehydration. Signs of heat exhaustion may include the signs of dehydration and potentially:\u00a0<\/p><ul><li>Fast, shallow breathing (panting). Normal respiration in a horse at rest is 8-12 breaths a minute.<\/li><li>Nostril flaring.<\/li><li>Increased rectal temperature, which does not (or very slowly) return to normal after a period of rest.
