What does the tawny owl hoot sound like?<\/h2>
Not that the tawny hoots to provide\u00a0humans with a\u00a0wondrous shiver, of course;\u00a0their\u00a0haunting ode might be a favourite sound effect of film-makers, but to the owl, it performs the same function as a robin\u2019s song \u2013 declaring territory and advertising for a mate. It is the male\u00a0whohoots, while the female responds with a sharp\u00a0ke-wick<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>

Why do tawny owls hoot?<\/h2>
The hoot is unique to the individual owl, and larger males call less frequently but finish with an extra flourish in their quivering vibrato.\u00a0Those pairs which successfully hold their territories lay two or three eggs in early spring.<\/p>

About the same size as a woodpigeon<\/a>, a tawny owl has a ring of dark feathers around its face surrounding deep, dark eyes. Its feathers are mainly reddish brown with a paler underbelly.<\/p>

The robust tawny owl is between 37\u201346\u00a0cm long with a wingspan of 81\u2013105\u00a0cm. They weigh between\u00a0 385 to 800g. <\/p>

When\u00a0silent, the tawny\u00a0owl\u00a0fervently\u00a0tries to go unseen. Clad in mottled brown \u2013 like an old oak trunk sprinkled with frost \u2013 the owl spends daylight in dense ivy or other woodland cover. If it\u00a0has the misfortune to be\u00a0spotted by small birds or corvids<\/a>,\u00a0a chattering mob descends without mercy.<\/p>

What do tawny owls eat?<\/h2>
Birds do in fact have some reason to fear this owl\u2019s very opportunistic appetite, with sparrows being a particular favourite. Also on the owl\u2019s menu are\u00a0wood mice and bank voles, beetles and even the occasional bat or slug.<\/p>
They catch rats, too, which is a good reason not to use rat poisons. Some 20% of tawny owls in one study showed contamination with rodenticides, although this is much lower than the proportion of barn owls affected by these substances. <\/p>
Noise from traffic is another problem. But there are still many magical moments when the clutter of the modern soundscape is pierced by that\u00a0tremulous wail from the dark night.<\/p>
