Researchers found brachycephalic dogs (dogs with\u00a0flat faces,\u00a0such as popular French Bulldogs)\u00a0have a\u00a040%\u00a0increased\u00a0risk of\u00a0living\u00a0shorter\u00a0lives\u00a0than dog breeds that don’t have flat faces<\/strong>, such as the Border Collie<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p> The study, led by leading dog charity The Dogs Trust<\/a>, showed the\u00a0median\u00a0life expectancy of all dogs was 12.5 years, with\u00a0breeds\u00a0such as the Lancashire Heeler (15.4 years), Tibetan Spaniel (15.2 years), and Miniature Dachshund (14.0 years),\u00a0living considerably longer than those with flat-faces,\u00a0such as French Bulldogs,\u00a0which only averaged 9.8 years.<\/p> The researchers used\u00a0data\u00a0from\u00a0over\u00a0half a million UK dogs,\u00a0from over\u00a0150 breeds\u00a0and crossbreeds\u00a0to\u00a0highlight\u00a0those dogs most at risk of an early death. <\/p> \u201cIssues related to their huge popularity and serious health problems have triggered a health and welfare crisis for flat-faced dog breeds such as the French Bulldog, Pug and English Bulldog,” s<\/strong>ays Dan O’Neill, Chair of the Brachycephalic Working Group (BWG)<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p> “This new research underlines these major health issues by revealing that flat-faced dogs live 1.5 years shorter lives than typical dogs.
