The climate then was hotter than it is today, and the fauna included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-rhinos\">rhinos<\/a>, straight-tusked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-elephants\">elephants<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/przewalskis-horse\">wild horses<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-lions\">lions<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/why-female-spotted-hyenas-rule-the-pack\">hyenas<\/a> and giant deer.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/britains-extinct-beasts\">Britain&#8217;s lost beasts: when did the moose, wolf and bear go extinct in UK?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-big-are-fallow-deer\">How big are fallow deer?<\/h2><p>Male fallow deer are bigger than females, weighing 46-80kg compared to females weighing 35-52kg (female). Often in matching pairs on opposite sides of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/days-out\/bridleways-what-they-are-who-can-use-them-and-how-we-can-save-threatened-bridleways\">footpaths<\/a> and lanes<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fewmets\">Fewmets<\/h3><p>The traditional term for deer dung, which can be either a scattering of small <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/how-to\/identify-wildlife\/how-to-identify-animal-droppings\">droppings<\/a>, 2-3cm in length, or a single cluster resembling a knobbly hand grenade.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-gnawed-bark\">Gnawed bark<\/h3><p>All deer gnaw bark to some extent, leaving vertical tooth marks. This is bad news for foresters, though not all trees are targeted.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-thrashed-vegetation\">Thrashed vegetation <\/h3><p>In common with red and sika stags, fallow bucks use low tree trunks and branches to scrape the velvet off their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/why-deer-have-antlers\">antlers<\/a> in late August-early September.
