{"id":39404,"date":"2024-08-14T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-14T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/9111cbe3-6613-4e8b-960e-4fa2e95e5d27"},"modified":"2024-08-14T18:26:40","modified_gmt":"2024-08-14T16:26:40","slug":"stonehenges-six-tonne-altar-stone-came-from-scotland-not-wales-finds-new-study","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbccountryfile\/rss_feed\/stonehenges-six-tonne-altar-stone-came-from-scotland-not-wales-finds-new-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Stonehenge&#8217;s six-tonne Altar Stone came from Scotland, not Wales, finds new study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">The enormous sandstone block has been matched with rocks from north-east Scotland, almost 500 miles from the world-famous prehistoric monument. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 14 August 2024 at 15:00 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p><strong>New research has revealed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/days-out\/stonehenge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stonehenge<\/a>\u2019s monumental Altar Stone, long believed to come from Wales, actually originates from Scotland.<\/strong><\/p><p>According to a new study \u2013 led by Curtin University in collaboration with Aberystwyth University, The University of Adelaide and University College London \u2013 the six-tonne stone, partially buried at the centre of the iconic stone circle in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/days-out\/wiltshire-travel-guide-history-days-out-walks-places-to-eat-stay\">Wiltshire<\/a>, has a &#8220;distinct chemical fingerprint&#8221; that suggests it came from rocks in the Orcadian Basin, Scotland.<\/p><p>The age and chemical composition of minerals within fragments of the Altar Stone are also clearly different from Welsh bedrock, says the study.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The five-metre-long Altar Stone is partially buried in the middle of Stonehenge. Credit: English Heritage<\/figcaption><\/figure><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/stone-circles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">11 best stone circle sites to visit in the UK<\/a><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-altar-stone-origins\">Altar Stone origins<\/h2><p>\u201cOur analysis found specific mineral grains in the Altar Stone are mostly between 1,000 to 2,000 million years old, while other minerals are around 450 million years old,\u201d says lead author Anthony Clarke from the Timescales of Mineral Systems Group within Curtin\u2019s School of Earth and Planetary Sciences.<\/p><p>Clarke says this suggests the stone came from rocks in north-east Scotland, which raises &#8220;fascinating questions, considering the technological constraints of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/days-out\/guide-to-neolithic-britain-when-was-the-neolithic-period-history-and-best-sites-to-visit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Neolithic<\/a> era, as to how such a massive stone was transported over vast distances around 2,600 BC.&#8221;<\/p><p>The study holds personal significance for Clarke, who grew up in the Mynydd Preseli, Wales, where some of Stonehenge\u2019s stones came from. <\/p><p>&#8220;I first visited Stonehenge when I was one year old and now at 25, I returned from Australia to help make this scientific discovery \u2013 you could say I\u2019ve come full circle at the stone circle.\u201d<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" poster=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/08\/Stonehenge.png\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/08\/Stonehenge-video.mp4\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Stonehenge was built in several stages, with its origins dating back about 5,000 years. Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-from-scotland-to-stonehenge\">From Scotland to Stonehenge<\/h2><p>Study co-author Professor Chris Kirkland, also from Curtin University, says the findings have significant implications on our understanding of ancient communities, their connections, and their transportation methods 5,000 years ago.<\/p><p>\u201cOur discovery of the Altar Stone\u2019s origins highlights a significant level of societal coordination during the Neolithic period and helps paint a fascinating picture of prehistoric Britain,\u201d says Kirkland.<\/p><p>\u201cTransporting such massive cargo overland from Scotland to southern England would have been extremely challenging, indicating a likely marine shipping route along the coast of Britain.<\/p><p>\u201cThis implies long-distance trade networks and a higher level of societal organisation than is widely understood to have existed during the Neolithic period in Britain.\u201d<\/p><p>Professor Richard Bevins (co-author) from Aberystwyth University says the findings counter what had been thought for the past century. \u201cWe have succeeded in working out, if you like, the age and chemical fingerprints of perhaps one of the most famous of stones in the world-renowned ancient monument.<\/p><p>\u201cWhile we can now say that this iconic rock is Scottish and not Welsh, the hunt will still very much be on to pin down where exactly in the north-east of Scotland the Altar Stone came from.\u201d<\/p><p>The study authors add that another unanswered question is exactly how (and why) the Altar Stone was transported from the very north of Scotland to Salisbury Plain in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/days-out\/wiltshire-travel-guide-history-days-out-walks-places-to-eat-stay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wiltshire<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2175\" height=\"1379\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/01\/Stonehenge-1.jpg\" alt=\"An aerial view of Stonehenge at sunrise\" class=\"wp-image-176840\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Exactly why and how the stone was transported from northern Scotland to southern England remains a mystery.
