The water\u00a0pipit acquires a slate-grey head, the white supercilium burnishes white, and a gorgeous rosaceous wash adorns the breast. This stunning makeover resembles a\u00a0person suddenly scrubbing up for an important event, such as a date.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-water-pipit-habitat-and-distribution\">Water pipit habitat and distribution<\/h2><p>While it may be rare, it&#8217;s also highly intriguing. Bearing in mind that it winters in lowland freshwater and coastal marshes, as well as its\u00a0favourite stakeout, watercress beds, where do you think it might spend the summer?<\/p><p>The answer is remarkable \u2013 it\u2019s in the high mountains of\u00a0central\u00a0and southern\u00a0Europe,\u00a0in alpine pastures mainly between\u00a01400-2500m (higher than anywhere in Britain).\u00a0That means \u2013 drumroll \u2013 that birds\u00a0visiting Britain\u00a0migrate NORTH in autumn, which is, of course, the \u201cwrong direction.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><p>However, because the migrants are coming down from a height, they\u00a0may go in any direction, a feature of \u201caltitudinal migration\u201d.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-do-water-pipits-eat\">What do water pipits eat?<\/h2><p>The water pipit\u2019s diet isn\u2019t as unusual as that of the rock pipit, containing mostly small insects, but it does have a taste for algae in some regions.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-the-water-pipit-call-sound-like\">What does the water pipit call sound like?<\/h2><p>The call is even a cross between meadow and rock (but this leaks into the realms of hardcore birding).\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-do-water-pipits-nest\">Where do water pipits nest?<\/h2><p>It breeds\u00a0on the ground, sometimes at the end of burrows, way up in the mountains.
