{"id":40761,"date":"2024-10-01T10:38:29","date_gmt":"2024-10-01T08:38:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/a3b11dbe-fca8-4083-9f6f-16ecea764c3d"},"modified":"2024-10-01T12:26:40","modified_gmt":"2024-10-01T10:26:40","slug":"pine-martens-return-to-devon-after-being-absent-for-more-than-a-century","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbccountryfile\/rss_feed\/pine-martens-return-to-devon-after-being-absent-for-more-than-a-century\/","title":{"rendered":"Pine martens return to Devon after being absent for more than a century"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">A pioneering conservation project has reintroduced 15 of the elusive mammals to a secret location in Dartmoor. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Simon Birch\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Tuesday, 01 October 2024 at 08:38 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p><strong>Pine martens are once again roaming free in woodlands in South West England after a 100-year absence thanks to a pioneering conservation project.<\/strong><\/p><p>This September, 15 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/mammals\/pine-marten-guide-how-to-identify-where-to-see-in-britain-and-other-facts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pine martens<\/a> \u2013 including eight females and seven males, sourced from healthy wild populations in Scotland \u2013 were released at secret locations across Dartmoor.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The project is being hailed by conservationists as a historic step in the restoration of the region\u2019s woodlands and their wildlife.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" poster=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/10\/Pine-marten.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/10\/Pine-martens-arrival-Sept-2024.mov\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The pine martens arrived at the release site in September 2024\/Devon Wildlife Trust<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>\u201cThese rare mammals need our help to return to their former homes in the south west, but we also need their help to bring back the natural balance of wildlife to our woodlands,\u201d says Ed Parr Ferris from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devonwildlifetrust.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Devon Wildlife Trust<\/a>, which is leading the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devonwildlifetrust.org\/two-moors-pine-marten-project-timeline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Two Moors Pine Marten Project<\/a>, a partnership of seven conservation organisations.<\/p><p>The project is now monitoring the progress of the 15 pine martens and each animal has been fitted with a radio collar to allow their movements to be tracked. The specially designed lightweight collars will drop off the animals after six to nine months.<\/p><p>Pine martens, which are members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/mammals\/guide-to-britains-mustelids-what-are-they-how-to-identify-and-where-do-they-live\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">weasel family<\/a>, are mostly solitary creatures and live at low densities. It is expected that the newly released animals will disperse to establish their own territories and that their population will gradually grow over the coming years.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" poster=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/10\/Pine-marten-release.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/10\/Pine-martens-trail-cam-releases-Sept-2024.mov\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A trail camera captures the moment the pine martens are released\/Devon Wildlife Trust<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The release of pine martens into Dartmoor is the first phase in the project\u2019s plans to establish a resident population in South West England following their disappearance more than 100 years ago as a result of their woodland habitat being destroyed and being hunted and trapped to extinction.<\/p><p>The project\u2019s second phase will now see a similar release of pine martens in Exmoor during 2025.<\/p><p>\u201cThe size of a small cat, pine martens are wonderful tree climbers\u00a0which makes them ideally suited to living in woodlands\u00a0and they play an important ecological role in our ecosystem.
