However, these structures take the notion of wonkiness to a whole new level \u2013 who knows how they&#8217;re still standing?<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The wonkiest houses in Britain<\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Crooked House, Himley, Staffordshire<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Crooked House in Staffordshire\/<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Perhaps Britain&#8217;s most famous wonky house, The Crooked House in Staffordshire owes its title to years of severe subsidence. Sadly, the building \u2013 once a pub \u2013 burnt down in suspicious circumstances in 2023 and was then demolished. In keeping with its quirkiness, the interior of the inn boasted several optical illusions, including bottles rolling uphill along its\u00a0dado rails.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1201\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/10\/1904-postcard.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-194427\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A 1904 postcard By George E Lee (G. Found on the corner of Market Street and Church Street in the town centre, the building dates to the late 17th century. It owes its wonky angle to being built from unseasoned green oak wood, which, says the <a href=\"https:\/\/welcometowindsor.com\/the-scandalous-history-of-windsors-crooked-house\">Welcome to Windsor website<\/a>, subsequently buckled as it dried. <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Crooked House, Lavenham, Suffolk<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1647\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/10\/Landscape_TheCrookedHouse_creditJamesDavidson-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"The crooked House is one of the most crooked houses in Britain\" class=\"wp-image-194448\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Crooked House in Lavenham,\/James Davidson<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Was this house the inspiration for the nursery rhyme <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/articles\/there-was-a-crooked-man-poem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Crooked House<\/em><\/a>? According to its website, it was built in 1395 as part of a grand hall house for a wealthy wool merchant, welcoming visitors such as King Richard II, Queen Elizabeth I and even John Lennon. It looks like it&#8217;s destined to topple! The traditional black-and-white house is from the 16th century, but has the 17th century to thank for its unstable look, for it was then that, during a bid to heighten the building, a break in the ridge piece occurred, causing the structure to slip forward.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Little Moreton Hall in Cheshire<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1745\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/10\/Little-Moreton-Hall.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-194513\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">By Christine-Ann Martin &#8211; Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=942415<\/figcaption><\/figure><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltrust.org.uk\/visit\/cheshire-greater-manchester\/little-moreton-hall\">Little Moreton Hall in Cheshire <\/a>is one of the UK&#8217;s finest timber-framed, moated manor houses. However, look closer at its south side and you will see it appears to be a little on the wonky side, collapsing slowly under its own weight.
