If you\u2019ve been struggling to get a good night\u2019s\u00a0rest, it\u2019s likely that you\u2019ve also developed some anxiety surrounding sleep, says Kathryn Pinkham, founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theinsomniaclinic.co.uk\/\">The Insomnia Clinic<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p> <p>Unfortunately, this can create a vicious cycle: the more anxious you feel, the harder it becomes to sleep, and the worse your sleep gets, the more your anxiety increases.<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/health\/best-anxiety-quotes\">Best anxiety quotes: Inspiring words to help you find calm and strength<\/a><\/li> <\/ul> <p>But there is hope! Here are Kathryn\u2019s\u00a0four\u00a0top tips to manage your sleep-related anxiety and improve your sleep quality so you can get back on track.<\/p> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Best sleep anxiety tips<\/h2> <p>1.\u00a0<strong>Make time for mindfulness.<\/strong> This doesn\u2019t have to take a huge amount of time out of your day.\u00a0Take\u00a0a simple moment, such as making a cup of tea, to take time to be present.\u00a0Focus\u00a0on what you can smell, see and hear.<\/p> <p>Then, when your mind starts to drift, which is very normal, gently bring yourself back to the present again. This teaches your body to be in the moment, which is where we need it to be to get it sleeping well again.\u00a0<\/p> <p>2.<strong>\u00a0Get your worries out of your head, and onto paper.<\/strong> This is a great way to rid yourself of any anxiety around sleep, or wider worries in general. Simply take a moment to put pen to paper and get these thoughts out of your head. This will clear your mind before bedtime, making these worries\u00a0less likely to surface when\u00a0your head hits the pillow.\u00a0<\/p> <p>3.\u00a0<strong>Forget the eight-hour myth.<\/strong> The reality is that\u00a0everyone has a different sleep need.\u00a0So, telling yourself you\u00a0have to\u00a0get eight hours of sleep will only add to the pressure, which will just leave you feeling more anxious. Instead, focus on quality of sleep instead of quantity, and aim for five to six hours of quality sleep instead.\u00a0<\/p> <p>4. <strong>Look for other ways to get more energy.<\/strong> Instead of doom-scrolling on social media, use any free time to get outside, get some fresh air and exercise.
