But in winter, when natural food become scarcer, many of these delightful rusty-coloured mammals are tempted by peanut feeders and offer human watchers a wonderful chance for close-up views. It has two small but distinctive ear tufts on the top of its head.<\/p> <p>Unlike more familiar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/facts-about-barn-owls\">barn<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/birds\/tawny-owl-facts\">tawny owls<\/a>, the short-eared regularly hunts in broad daylight and you will often find 2-6 birds in the same area. They fly slowly and silently above the marshes, dropping suddenly to snatch a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/mammals\/guide-to-britains-shrews-mice-and-voles\">vole<\/a> before vanishing into a deeper tuft of rushes or reeds to eat it. Credit: Nick Hurst, Getty <\/figcaption> <\/figure> <p>The most endearing sound undoubtedly is vocalised by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/birds\/tawny-owl-facts\">tawny owls<\/a>, as the soothing twit-twoo is a familiar sound associated with an early morning walk. More charming is the call and response method of this mating call to seek out a mate for life, with the male tawny owl releasing a \u2018twit,\u2019 and the female answering with \u2018twoo.\u2019<\/p> <p>In spite of the nocturnal nature of these animals, fortunately they are noisiest in December, which increases the chances of them being heard in daylight on a Christmas family countryside outing, most especially near dawn and dusk.<\/p> <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Laughing green woodpecker<\/h3> <figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2125\" height=\"1411\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2018\/09\/GettyImages-124758610-9e39420.jpg\" alt=\"Green woodpecker looking for its food on the ground\" class=\"wp-image-8995\" title=\"Green Woodpecker, Picus viridis\"\/> <figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Listen for the laughing call \u2013 or &#8216;yaffle&#8217; \u2013 of the green woodpecker. Credit: Gerard Soury, Getty <\/figcaption> <\/figure> <p>In comparison to the soothing sound of an owl hoot, the shrill pecking of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/birds\/woodpecker-guide-uk-species-how-to-identify-where-to-see\">woodpecker<\/a> on dead wood is a very different mating call heard during the winter season.<\/p> <p>The green woodpecker is the largest of the three breeds that habitat in Britain, and feed mostly on the ground which improves the chance of spotting them on a family festive wander through woodland or parks. Their noisiest period is generally January and February, and they habitat in wooded areas, nesting in trees. Credit: Marianna Armata, Getty <\/figcaption> <\/figure> <p>Grey squirrels have one of two mating seasons between December to February and are therefore an intriguing animal to look out for this Christmas period.<\/p> <p>These <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/woodland-animals\">woodland creatures<\/a> are noisy all year round, from a \u2018kut, kut, kut\u2019 sound warning of danger, to a gleeful whine and chatter their voices will be distinctive and heard by all.
