Amid the lumps, bumps and rounded humps that form the ridgelines of the Brecon Beacons, sits Cribyn.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the kind of peak a child may draw; pyramidal and\u00a0stacked with brawn. Yet in spite of its mountain\u00a0status, its summit is neither as high nor as\u00a0insurmountable as you may imagine.<\/p>\n

The Brecon Beacons comprises an Old Red\u00a0Sandstone ridge formed over 400 million years ago\u00a0during the Devonian period. In the millennia that\u00a0followed, glacial erosion shaped the landscape that\u00a0we see today, of steep escarpments to the north and\u00a0east, banked at their bases with heaps of grey\u00a0moraine.<\/p>\n

Cribyn walk<\/h3>\n

18.5km\/11.5miles |\u00a06 hours | moderate\/hard<\/em><\/p>\n

Cribyn, at 795m, sits 101m below the tallest peak in\u00a0southern Britain, Pen y Fan. But far from inferior, the\u00a0angular mount affords spectacular views over the\u00a0surrounding countryside, making it well worth the\u00a0climb.<\/p>\n

1. From Llanfrynach<\/strong><\/p>\n

To avoid the crowds, park at Llanfrynach and follow\u00a0the Three Rivers Ride<\/a> route to the base of Bryn\u00a0Teg, a ridge that leads up to Cribyn.\u00a0The way is steady going, with\u00a0a short section requiring a half-scramble.\u00a0The tactility of the rock beneath your\u00a0hands brings you closer to the land and offers the\u00a0sense that you are not just summiting some humble\u00a0hill, but a true mountain.<\/p>\n

2. Southbound<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jut after Neuadd, the road swings to the left beside a sign post for the Three Rivers Ride \u00e2\u0080\u0093 leave the way marked trail and stay on the road. crossing over a bridge and continuing on for another mile or so.<\/p>\n

3. Ridgeback<\/strong><\/p>\n

Continue straight on to leave the roadway and begin your climb up the Bryn Teg ridge. The way is steady going, with a short section requiring a half-scramble. The tactility of the rock beneath your hands brings you closer to the land and offers the sense that you are not just summiting some humble hill, but a true mountain.<\/p>\n

4. Summit<\/strong><\/p>\n

From the peak, the impressive rock face of Pen y Fan glows green with mosses and plants, while trailing off to the east is Fan y Big. Look for peregrine falcons, buzzards and red kites swooping gracefully above the national park\u00e2\u0080\u0099s monoliths. The Black Mountains mark the eastern skyline, while to the south, on a clear day, you can gaze across the Bristol Channel to Exmoor and Devon\u00e2\u0080\u0099s rugged north coast. Drop gently from the peak to the east to meet \u00e2\u0080\u0098The Gap Road\u00e2\u0080\u0099.<\/p>\n

5. To the pub<\/strong><\/p>\n

This clear track is popular among\u00a0bikers and hikers, and leads down to rejoin the Three\u00a0Rivers Ride<\/a>. <\/b>As you descend north to\u00a0The White Swan Inn<\/a> in Llanfrynach for a well-deserved drink, look back\u00a0and marvel at your day\u2019s muse: beautiful Cribyn.<\/p>\n
