Their calendar, in connection with the phases of the Moon, used three terms to mark the passage of a month. A \u2018Kalend\u2019 was the first day of the month; a \u2018None\u2019 signified the first quarter of the Moon (the fifth or seventh day) and an \u2018Ide\u2019 was the full Moon (the 13th or 15th day).\u00a0Therefore the Ides of March simply meant: 15 March.<\/p>\n<p>In 44 BC, the Ides of March took on a new meaning. <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.historyextra.com\/period\/roman\/julius-caesar-emperor-who-biography\/&quot;\">Julius Caesar<\/a>, who had seized power from the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.historyextra.com\/period\/roman\/roman-republic-guide-how-senate-plebeians-citizenship-women-democratic-fall-end\/&quot;\">Roman Republic<\/a> and made himself a dictator, <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.historyextra.com\/period\/roman\/death-julius-caesar-what-we-know-ides-of-march-brutus-cassius-et-tu\/&quot;\">was murdered<\/a> by a group of 60 dagger-wielding Senators led by his friends, Brutus and Cassius.<\/p>\n<h3>Ides of March: did Julius Caesar have any warning?<\/h3>\n<div>Caesar had known that many wished him dead and a soothsayer allegedly warned him that harm would come to him before the Ides of March. On 15 March, Caesar reportedly passed the soothsayer joking, \u201cThe Ides of March have come,\u201d but was met with the ominous reply, \u201cAye, Caesar, but not gone.\u201d<\/div>\n<div\/>\n<div>This moment has been immortalised by <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.historyextra.com\/period\/elizabethan\/william-shakespeare-kenneth-branagh-facts-life-plays-playwright-writer-bard\/&quot;\">William Shakespeare<\/a> in his play,<em> Julius Caesar.<\/em> It is from Shakespeare that we have the famous warning given by the soothsayer: \u201cBeware the Ides of March.\u201d<\/div>\n<div\/>\n<div>Caesar\u2019s murder failed to bring back the Republic, but triggered the start of the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.historyextra.com\/period\/roman\/roman-empire-history-facts-map-timeline-peak-when-start-when-split-how-long-tetrarchy\/&quot;\">Roman empire<\/a> under his adopted heir, Octavian (known as <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.historyextra.com\/period\/roman\/the-bloody-rise-of-augustus\/&quot;\">Augustus<\/a>).<\/div>\n<div\/>\n<div>Before the assassination, the Ides of March was best known as a festival. The popular time for feasting and drinking marked the festival of Roman deity Anna Perenna.
