The cathedral was built over the course of 200 years \u2013 construction began in 1163 during the reign of King Louis VII, and the first stone is said to have been laid in the presence of Pope Alexander III. According to <a href=\"\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/archaeology-and-history\/magazine\/2017\/05-06\/notre-dame-de-paris\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener noopener noreferrer\" noreferrer=\"\">National Geographic<\/a>: \u201cIn the 18th century ideas of architectural taste radically shifted. In the middle of the reign of Louis XIV, the venerable cathedral faced a radical and controversial makeover, a \u2018restoration\u2019 that later generations would consider caused more damage than centuries of wear and tear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rood screen, studded with sculptures, was pulled down. The stained glass windows from the 12th and 13th centuries were replaced with clear glass. Only the three Notre-Dame rose windows retain much of their original glazing. A pillar of the central doorway was demolished to allow grand processional carriages to pass through.\u201d<br\/><\/p><div class=\"&quot;listicle&quot;\"> <span class=\"&quot;listicle__count&quot;\">4<\/span> <h3 class=\"&quot;listicle__title\" heading-3=\"\">The April 2019 fire caused more damage that the French Revolution<\/h3>\n<\/div> <p>Notre-Dame suffered further damage and devastation during the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.historyextra.com\/period\/georgian\/storming-bastille-day-french-revolution-what-happened-why-when-date\/&quot;\">French Revolution<\/a> (1787\u201399): regarded as \u201ca symbol of the power and aggression of church and monarchy\u201d, the building was ransacked; sculptures and statues were destroyed; lead from the roof was pillaged for bullets and a number of bronze bells were melted down to make cannon, says National Geographic. By the end of the revolution, Notre-Dame was \u201ca shadow of its former self\u201d and had been de-Christianised.<\/p>\n<p>Comparing the 2019 fire to the havoc wreaked during the French Revolution, <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.historyextra.com\/period\/modern\/notre-dame-cathedral-fire-significance-reaction-when-happened-before-not-worst-history-medieval\/&quot;\">Dr Emily Guerry told <em>History Extra<\/em>:<\/a> \u201cEven during the French Revolution we did not have half this level of destruction. What took place during the French Revolution was targeted iconoclasm \u2013 holy images were destroyed because of the perception that they were associated with the Ancien R\u00e9gime (the political and social system of France from the late Middle Ages until 1789); old Catholic traditions; and tyranny; it was an attempt to destroy Notre-Dame\u2019s power. Having decided that <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.historyextra.com\/period\/georgian\/napoleon-invasion-england-when-why-fail\/&quot;\">his coronation ceremony<\/a> would take place there, Napoleon ensured that repair work quickly got underway and ordered that the streets along which the cortege was to pass \u2013 namely rue de Rivoli, the Place du Carrousel and the Quai Bonaparte \u2013 should be entirely paved ahead of his 1804 coronation.<br\/><\/p><div class=\"&quot;listicle&quot;\"> <span class=\"&quot;listicle__count&quot;\">6<\/span> <h3 class=\"&quot;listicle__title\" heading-3=\"\">The <em>Hunchback of Notre-Dame <\/em>was vital to its restoration<\/h3>\n<\/div> <p>In spite of Napoleon\u2019s efforts, Notre-Dame remained in a poor state and was half-ruined inside. Nineteenth-century French writer Victor Hugo\u2019s 1831 novel <em>Notre-Dame de Paris<\/em>, published in English as <em>The Hunchback of Notre Dame<\/em>, sparked a campaign to further restore the cathedral. The Romantic literary movement <a href=\"\/\/www.sparknotes.com\/lit\/hunchback\/section13\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener noopener noreferrer\" noreferrer=\"\">\u201cseized upon the cathedral as a symbol of France\u2019s glorious Christian past\u201d<\/a> and campaigned vigorously for it to be returned to its former glory. In 1844 the famous French architect Eug\u00e8ne Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc was appointed to lead a complete restoration of Notre-Dame \u2013 a project that stretched over the course of nearly 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>Hugo\u2019s book was adapted into a 1996 Disney film, <em>The Hunchback of Notre Dame<\/em>.<br\/><\/p><div class=\"&quot;listicle&quot;\"> <span class=\"&quot;listicle__count&quot;\">7<\/span> <h3 class=\"&quot;listicle__title\" heading-3=\"\">Joan of Arc was beatified at Notre-Dame Cathedral<\/h3>\n<\/div> <p>In 1909, the tragic French heroine <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.historyextra.com\/period\/medieval\/the-real-joan-of-arc\/&quot;\">Joan of Arc<\/a>, who led a French army to victory over the English at the Siege of Orl\u00e9ans (1428\u201329) during the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.historyextra.com\/period\/medieval\/7-facts-about-the-hundred-years-war\/&quot;\">Hundred Years\u2019 War<\/a> and was later burned at the stake as a heretic by the English, was beatified in Paris\u2019s Notre-Dame cathedral by Pope Pius X. This is a recognition accorded by the Catholic Church of a dead person\u2019s entrance into Heaven.<br\/><\/p><div class=\"&quot;listicle&quot;\"> <span class=\"&quot;listicle__count&quot;\">8<\/span> <h3 class=\"&quot;listicle__title\" heading-3=\"\">Notre-Dame Cathedral was damaged during the<\/h3>\n<\/div> <p>The cathedral was damaged during the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.historyextra.com\/period\/first-world-war\/facts-first-world-war-armistice-dates-triple-alliance-triple-entente\/&quot;\">First World War<\/a>. According to the <em>Washington Post<\/em>, in 1914 more than two dozen German shells hit the cathedral and the wooden scaffolding was set on fire, which in turn lit the oak of the roof.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lead used to seal the roof melted, which in turn set the wooden pews on fire.
