In 1614 Virginian colonist John Rolfe, the husband of <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.historyextra.com\/period\/stuart\/real-life-pocahontas-history-disney-john-smith-name-story-facts-jamestown-myths-name-rebecca-marriage\/&quot;\">Pocahontas<\/a>, sent four barrels of tobacco back to England and it soon became a major New World crop.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How did the Elizabethans smoke Tobacco?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In clay pipes, which held sway until the late 19th century. However they were rolled by hand and even an expert worker could only produce about four a minute.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>When were cigarettes first mass-produced?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In 1881, James Bonsack invented a machine that could produce 120,000 cigarettes a day. He joined forces with Washington Duke\u2019s son and in their first year they produced 10 million cigarettes \u2013 more than they could sell.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>When did smoking become popular?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The popularity of smoking really took off during the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.historyextra.com\/period\/first-world-war\/facts-first-world-war-one-ww1-armistice-dates-triple-alliance-triple-entente\/&quot;\">First World War<\/a>. Cigarettes were an essential part of a soldier\u2019s rations and the British Princess Mary Gift Fund sent over 400,000 tins of tobacco and cigarettes to troops for Christmas 1914.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Didn\u2019t people know smoking tobacco was bad for you?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Not at first.
