The victory enabled Richard and his crusading army to continue their advance on Jaffa, but the ultimate prize, Jerusalem, was to elude them.<\/p>\n<hr\/><h3>7 September 1764<\/h3>\n<p>Stanis\u0142aw August Poniatowski, former lover of Catherine the Great, is elected as last king and Grand Duke of the Common- wealth of Poland-Lithuania.<\/p>\n<hr\/><h3>7 September 1812<\/h3>\n<p>Napoleon won a costly but inconclusive victory over the Russians at the battle of Borodino. With over 70,000 casualties it was the bloodiest single day of fighting in the Napoleonic Wars.<\/p>\n<hr\/><h3>7 September 1860: Garibaldi enters Naples in triumph<\/h3>\n<p><strong><em>The general becomes master of southern Italy \u2013 an important step towards unification<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Summer 1860 found radical lawyer Edwin James in Italy, awaiting one of the greatest spectacles of the age. After conquering Sicily, Italian nationalist leader Giuseppe Garibaldi had landed on the mainland on 19 August and was marching his troops north towards Naples. As the redshirts came closer, the city\u2019s Bourbon ruler, Francis II, began to panic and on the night of 6 September he fled. Garibaldi\u2019s entry into the city was a triumph of public relations. The self-styled liberator arrived by train from Salerno, a sign of his modernity. \u201cThe joy and enthusiasm of the people,\u201d wrote James, who had a seat on board, \u201cexceed the powers of description.\u201d And as Garibaldi made his way through the city by carriage, the crowds became ever more enthusiastic.<\/p>\n<p>James wrote the next day: \u201cNo pen can describe the scene \u2013 the whole population thronged the station \u2013 bands, banners,\u00a0bandieri, National Guards, carriages, ladies of rank and station attired in their white dresses trimmed with Garibaldian colours\u2026 every human being in the city almost, formed the procession to the Palazzo\u00a0d\u2019Angri, and there he is installed, and shows himself at the windows. The shouts of \u2018Viva Garibaldi!\u2019 and \u2018Viva Italia una!\u2019 are deafening, and thousands crowd the staircases and saloons of this palace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, wrote another observer, \u201cby the will of the Almighty and of a people now stammering the first accents of freedom\u201d, Giuseppe Garibaldi was the master of southern Italy.<\/p>\n<hr\/><h3><strong>7 September 1893<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>On the Ligurian coast, north-west Italy, a group of expats set up a cricket and athletics club wearing the English colours of red and white.
