When the Royal Flying Corps first flew to France in August 1914, at the <\/span>start of the First World War<\/a>, it is said they took London Gin to remind <\/span>themselves of home. They expected the French to have tonic which they <\/span>could use as a mixer; unfortunately, they did not. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis proved to be a big problem,\u201d describes Paul Beaver, \u201cas they still <\/span>needed something to mix with their gin\u201d. Instead, the men decided to add <\/span>champagne<\/a> to their drinks. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn doing so, they created what was probably <\/span>the first cocktail to be made in war,\u201d Beaver adds. \u201cIt was called the <\/span>French 75, named after the French 75-millimeter light field guns that fired <\/span>throughout the day and night, and made it impossible for the Corps to <\/span>sleep.\u201d It was said that the drink had such a kick, that it felt like being <\/span>shelled by one of these powerful artillery pieces.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s certainly a fun and unexpected bit of trivia about the Royal Flying <\/span>Corps,\u201d says Beaver. \u201cAfter all, what do you expect from army officers?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n
