But did it actually exist? <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Nick Higham\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Friday, 18 August 2023 at 08:10 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body> <p>Camelot first appears in <a href=\"\/period\/medieval\/who-was-chretien-de-troyes-and-why-are-his-arthurian-romances-important\/\">Chr\u00e9tien de Troyes<\/a>\u2019 late 12th-century French romance <em>Lancelot or The Knight in the Cart<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Given that this story was very much his creation, the name is likely to have been made up, presumably based on Geoffrey of Monmouth\u2019s \u2018Camblan\u2019 or Wace\u2019s \u2018Camble\u2019, with \u2018-lot\u2019 added to fit the rhyme (meaning \u2018share\u2019, \u2018fate\u2019).<\/p>\n<p>There have however been numerous attempts to identify <a href=\"https:\/\/www.historyextra.com\/period\/medieval\/king-arthur-facts-real-round-table-holy-grail-death-buried-lancelot-guinevere\/\">King Arthur<\/a>\u2018s Camelot. Winchester was a candidate in the later <a href=\"\/period\/medieval\/middle-ages-facts-what-customs-writers-knights-serfs-marriage-travel\/\">Middle Ages<\/a>, then South Cadbury Hillfort in the reign of <a href=\"\/period\/tudor\/king-henry-viii-facts-wives-spouse-execution-weight-reformation-cromwell\/\">Henry VIII<\/a>, based presumably on nearby names such as the river Cam.<\/p>\n<p>Colchester in Essex and the Roman fort at Slack near Huddersfield have also been put forward as possible Camelots, because they were called Camulodunum (literally \u2018fortress of the god Camul\u2019) in <a href=\"\/period\/roman\/everything-you-wanted-to-know-roman-britain-miles-russell-facts\/\">Roman Britain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Before taking any of these too seriously, we surely have to show that there is a good chance that Chr\u00e9tien had drawn the name from a reliable and near-contemporary source.
