<\/p>
One of the most feared pirates to ever sail the seas was Edward Teach, more commonly known as Blackbeard<\/a>. Believed to have been raised in Bristol in around 1680, he was probably employed as a privateer<\/a> before being taken under the wing of prolific Caribbean pirate Benjamin Hornigold<\/a>.<\/p>\n In November 1717, he captured the French frigate La Concorde<\/em>, which was transporting several hundred slaves between Juda on the coast of West Africa and Martinique in the Caribbean. The ship\u2019s crew, outnumbered and weak after a long and arduous Atlantic crossing, were soon overcome and La Concorde<\/em>\u2019s captain, Pierre Dosset, surrendered to Blackbeard.<\/p>\n The ship was adapted to make it suitable for its nefarious activities: extra guns were added and any slaves that didn\u2019t join the crew were eventually sold on. With room for 300 crew and 40 guns, the vessel, renamed Queen Anne\u2019s Revenge<\/em> \u2013 thought to be a nod to Blackbeard\u2019s Jacobite beliefs<\/a> and his desire to see the Stuart dynasty and Queen Anne<\/a>\u2019s heirs restored to the throne<\/a> \u2013 became the flagship of his fleet.<\/p>\n On 22 November 1718, six months after Queen Anne\u2019s Revenge<\/em> had been run aground and abandoned, a bloody battle brought Blackbeard\u2019s rule to an end.<\/p>\n Taking place just off the coast of North Carolina on board the pirate ship Adventure<\/em>, Lieutenant Robert Maynard engaged Blackbeard in hand-to-hand combat \u2013 the fearsome pirate suffered 20 cutlass wounds, five pistol shots and was beheaded.
