Believed to have been raised in Bristol in around 1680, he was probably employed as a <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.historyextra.com\/period\/stuart\/privateers-buccaneers-corsairs-what-difference-letters-marque\/&quot;\">privateer<\/a> before being taken under the wing of prolific <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.historyextra.com\/period\/stuart\/nassau-pirate-republic-flying-gang-real-pirates-caribbean\/&quot;\">Caribbean pirate Benjamin Hornigold<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In November 1717, he captured the French frigate <em>La Concorde<\/em>, which was transporting several hundred slaves between Juda on the coast of West Africa and Martinique in the Caribbean.
