Welcome

November 2022

Four Somali men meet for a chat in Cardiff, 1950. The stories of black people in Britain and the former British empire are explored in this month’s Essential Guide

Shortly before we sent this issue to press we, along with the rest of the world, received the sad news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II. We’ll look back at her historic life and reign in future issues of the magazine, but in the meantime, you can download a free special edition about the Queen, produced by our sister publication BBC History Magazine to commemorate her Platinum Jubilee earlier this year. You can find that at historyextra.com/queenbookazine. You’ll need to register for the HistoryExtra website to access it, if you haven’t done so already.

October, shortly after this issue goes on sale, is Black History Month in the UK, and we’ve taken the opportunity to explore the often-forgotten histories of African and Caribbean people in Britain, as well as elsewhere in the former empire – from African- Roman soldiers on Hadrian’s Wall, to postwar migration. Guiding us through more than 2,000 years of history is expert Hannah Cusworth.

Elsewhere, we investigate the beginnings of climate change science, find out what it took for an aristocratic woman to make a good Regency marriage and ask what might have happened had Giuseppe Garibaldi not unified Italy. We also examine the mystery of Lord Lucan’s disappearance and take a look at a groundbreaking painting by Paul Cezanne.

See you next month!
