Research by Queen’s University in Belfast has shown that dogs left at home by themselves show fewer signs of stress if they are treated to, say, a little Haydn to help pass the time. Audio books, in contrast, were shown to have no effect. Or, to put it in the paper’s own words, ‘Dogs exposed to classical music were significantly faster to lie down than animals in the audiobook condition’. So, for a happy fourlegged friend, bin the Jane Austen and put on some Paganini. As Austen herself would point out, it is a truth universally acknowledged that a single hound in possession of a house must be in want of a tune.
