It’s impossible to separate the magic of Walt Disney movies from their accompanying iconic Disney soundtracks.

More often than not, it is the music that enhances our understanding of the Disney viewing experience, and the release of the brilliant Moana 2 has had us delving into the archives.

Here, then, is our personal selection of the very best and most memorable Disney soundtracks from the studio’s illustrious history. And, while we’re in a Disney mood, we’ve also ranked the 15 greatest Disney songs of all time (interesting to note that one golden decade gave us six of them).

Best Disney soundtracks

11. Hercules (1997)

Featuring music by composer Alan Menken, a name you’ll be hearing once or twice more below, the soundtrack to Hercules is one of Disney’s best loved musical offerings. Much of the music has a lively, gospel-infused feel, as well as an energetic, fun-filled spin on the Greek myths.

Standout tracks include ‘Go the Distance’, Hercules’ signature anthem, in which our hero gives vent to his longing to find where he truly belongs. Uplifting and inspiring, with its message about striving for greatness and the courage to go beyond one’s limits, it was later covered by Michael Bolton for the soundtrack album.
