Ask any classical music fan for a list of the greatest composers and, as likely as not, their choices will be overwhelmingly European. But what of classical music in other parts of the world? Who, for example, might be considered the best Latin American composers?

It’s a very valid question. The cities of Latin America have long been thriving cultural centres. From the late 19th century, audiences in the drawing rooms and theatres of Latin America – from the top of Mexico down to the tip of South America and across to the Caribbean – listened to much the same music that audiences were hearing in Europe.
