This week’s free download is Peter Donohoe’s performance of Busoni’s Sonatina super Carmen, released on the Chandos label. Often given as an encore, Busoni’s Sonatina No. 6 is based on the themes of Bizet’s opera Carmen. The composer was a fan of transcription and arrangement, with many of these interpretations of other composers’ works heard on this new recording by Donohoe. ‘The clouds roll away and the sun comes out, as Busoni and Donohoe play exuberantly to the gallery,’ critic Michael Church writes.
