For some, it’s the red-hot personality. Others are drawn to the complex du Pré-Barenboim love story. Some listeners feel that the tragic emotions evoked in the music foreshadow the tragedy that later befell the performer. Whatever the reasons behind its power, the truth is undeniable: Jacqueline du Pré’s recording of the Elgar Cello Concerto has a magic that has made it legendary.
