There is no overestimating the contribution of Russian composers to the history of Western music; there have been just so many, particularly since the nineteenth century, which saw the emergence of the Russian nationalist musical style.

Here is a quick introduction to Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, and their most important musical compatriots.

Best Russian composers

11. Mily Balakirev (1837–1910)

Mily Balakirev was a leader of the late 19th-century Russian nationalist movement, that sought to blend folk music with classical traditions. As the driving force behind the composers’ group The Mighty Handful, Balakirev championed a distinctly Russian voice in classical music. His best works achieve a gripping synthesis of Romanticism and native Russian folk elements.

Balakirev is perhaps best known for his exotic piano piece, Islamey: An Oriental Fantasy (1869). A virtuosic showpiece for piano, inspired by Caucasian folk music, Islamey combines exotic scales and vibrant rhythms. It’s one of the most challenging and celebrated pieces in the piano repertoire, and Ravel cited it as an influence for his own (intensely atmospheric and fiendishly difficult) Gaspard de la nuit.
