What’s on at the BBC Proms today?
Today’s Prom, Prom 18, features English singer and songwriter Sam Smith performing In the Lonely Hour, their breakthrough debut album from 2014. They will be accompanied by the brilliant and versatile BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Simon Hale.
Who is Sam Smith?
Sam Smith is a singer-songwriter from London who shot to fame in 2012 when they featured on ‘Latch’, the breakthrough single from electronic music duo Disclosure.
Previous to this, Sam had studied singing and songwriting and performed in jazz bands.
Sam’s debut album ‘In the Lonely Hour’ (2014) entered the UK Albums Chart at number one. It also picked up four Grammy Awards including Song and Record of the Year.

To date, Sam has eight number one singles to their name. These include ‘Writing’s on the Wall’, which became the first song composed for a James Bond film (Spectre, in this case) to reach number one in the UK Singles Chart. Sam also won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for ‘Writing’s on the Wall’.
In 2023, Sam Smith was in the headlines after a ‘satanic’-themed performance at the 65th Grammy Awards. Sam was joined by German transgender singer Kim Petras to perform their joint number one hit ‘Unholy’. The song won Best Pop Duo at the awards, and Kim also became the award’s first transgender winner. to win the award. Much of the attention, however, focused on the duo’s apparently ‘demonic’ performance.
