Far from sounding disaffected like many of their peers, the group\u2019s polished post-bop projected an urbane confidence. In the intervening years (the band was together for just 18 months), its members have all forayed into more challenging contemporary territory. But, reuniting for <em>LongGone, <\/em>the years fall away as the timeless music they make together falls back into place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">Redman still leads from the front, providing six straightahead original numbers for his sidemen to revel in. His playing on the title track has the sweet, restrained feel of a late-\u201950s Blue Note session, the tenorist barely breaking a sweat as he deftly negotiates his tune\u2019s twists and turns. Virtuosic pianist Brad Mehldau is in his happy, high tempo place on \u2018Disco Ears\u2019, urged on by Blade and McBride snapping at his heels. Redman\u2019s sax lines bob and weave on \u2018Kite Song\u2019, tethered by Mehldau, both hands independently busy. Everyone finally lets go completely on \u2018Rejoice\u2019, a bustling 12-minute live jam animated by McBride\u2019s vamping. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\"><span style=\"\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ccp-primary-dark-color\">\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n<h3>Jazz round-up<\/h3>\n\n<div class=\"no-tts wp-block-image article-in-image photo\"><figure class=\"no-tts alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/dj9jqhxgw9833.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2022\/09\/f80f9dd0-ef9a-410c-bf7d-881500229cea.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"no-tts wp-image-19846\" width=\"150\" height=\"149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2022\/09\/f80f9dd0-ef9a-410c-bf7d-881500229cea.jpg 220w, https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2022\/09\/f80f9dd0-ef9a-410c-bf7d-881500229cea-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">French multi-instrumentalist <em><strong>C\u00e9dric Hanriot \u2019s <\/strong><\/em>protean keyboard skills have been much sought after by big stars across the jazz spectrum since he left Berklee College of Music. But his debut as leader, <em><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ccp-primary-dark-color\">Time Is Color<\/span>, <\/strong><\/em>suggests he\u2019ll soon be operating at the same level \u2013 albeit in a hard-to-pigeonhole genre. A truly original thinker, Hanriot\u2019s multi-textured sound palette is stunning. Hypnotic piano lines threaded through synth washes and bubbling bass, with kit drum beats, create music that realistically should be beyond the trio format. Laconic vocal lines from the slam poet\/rapper Days add yet another compelling dimension on four tracks. <em>(Morphosis Arts LMA 001)<\/em> <span class=\"has-inline-color has-ccp-primary-dark-color\">\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<\/span><\/p>\n\n<div class=\"no-tts wp-block-image article-in-image photo\"><figure class=\"no-tts alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/dj9jqhxgw9833.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2022\/09\/14ac72df-5cd9-4c7a-a513-fa7a6b9b0698.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"no-tts wp-image-19847\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2022\/09\/14ac72df-5cd9-4c7a-a513-fa7a6b9b0698.jpg 219w, https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2022\/09\/14ac72df-5cd9-4c7a-a513-fa7a6b9b0698-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">With his eponymous <em><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ccp-primary-dark-color\">Ragawerk<\/span> <\/strong><\/em>project, the accomplished Frankfurt-based guitarist <em><strong>Max Clouth <\/strong><\/em>is the latest jazz musician to tap into the rich seam of Indian classical music. Clouth has perhaps gone further than most, following up German conservatoire training with three years in Mumbai immersed in Indian music; even his tailormade double-neck guitar is based on Indian string instruments. Alongside longtime collaborator, drummer Martin Standke, and a cast of 15 (mostly Indian) players, he\u2019s created a sound that identifies with John McLaughlin\u2019s Shakti, expanded by lush synth, ethnic acoustic instruments and vocals. They were attracted to the chordless ensemble because of the openness it allowed them. It takes a high level of creative and physical energy to&nbsp;<span>pull it off and Duncan Eagles has both in spades. <\/span><em><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ccp-primary-dark-color\">Anniversary Song,<\/span> <\/strong><\/em><span>the fifth album from <\/span><em><strong>Partikel, <\/strong><\/em><span>his trio with Max Luthert (bass) and Eric Ford (drums) is a tour de force \u2013 albeit tightly controlled force. Teeming, sometimes torrential rhythm accompaniment swirling around Eagles\u2019s even, muscular tenor improv, grip the ears across the ten original pieces on this terrific album. <\/span><em>(Berthold Records BR321099)<\/em> \u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"no-tts wp-block-image article-in-image photo\"><figure class=\"no-tts alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/dj9jqhxgw9833.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2022\/09\/c56c06f0-deea-489d-b0be-c6671a9f86ab.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"no-tts wp-image-19849\" width=\"150\" height=\"149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2022\/09\/c56c06f0-deea-489d-b0be-c6671a9f86ab.jpg 220w, https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2022\/09\/c56c06f0-deea-489d-b0be-c6671a9f86ab-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">The Blue Note label is best known for its rich legacy of groundbreaking jazz from the \u201950s and \u201960s. But recently, under the leadership of Don Was, it has re-established itself as source of fresh, unfettered talent. With its <em><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ccp-primary-dark-color\">Re:imagined<\/span> <\/strong><\/em>series it cleverly combines new sounds with classic material, inviting young players (not necessarily signed to Blue Note) to reinterpret recordings from the vault. For <em><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ccp-primary-dark-color\">Re:imagined II,<\/span> <\/strong><\/em>Was let some of the UK\u2019s bright young stars loose in the archive. The result is a selection box of reverb heavy, radio friendly confections (like Ego Ella May\u2019s take on drummer Chico Hamilton\u2019s \u2018The Morning Side Of Love\u2019) interspersed with more outr\u00e9 numbers, like tubist Theon Cross\u2019s glowering version of Thelonious Monk\u2019s \u2018Epistrophy\u2019. <em>Re:imagined II <\/em>is an uneven and quirky snapshot of the scene, but none the worse for that. <em>(Blue Note 4564812) <\/em> \u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"no-tts wp-block-image article-in-image photo\"><figure class=\"no-tts alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/dj9jqhxgw9833.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2022\/09\/eaea6737-076d-4541-b645-b47d9ed98df0.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"no-tts wp-image-19850\" width=\"150\" height=\"149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2022\/09\/eaea6737-076d-4541-b645-b47d9ed98df0.jpg 220w, https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2022\/09\/eaea6737-076d-4541-b645-b47d9ed98df0-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">With <em><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ccp-primary-dark-color\">Man In The Hot Seat<\/span>, <\/strong><\/em>the mephistophelean acid jazz pioneer <em><strong>James Taylor <\/strong><\/em>and his quartet have reimagined the sound of action movie soundtracks from the \u201960s and \u201970s. A seemingly improbable pairing, it makes perfect sense for a group that grew up in Richmond, Virginia, US. \u2018There\u2019s a tradition of big bands in Richmond. They\u2019re always present. But they\u2019ve developed a modern sound, with traditional instrumentation,\u2019 says producer\/ instrumentalist DJ Harrison. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">What started as a passion project for bassist\/composer Andrew Randazzo (\u2018to hone my writing chops a little bit\u2019) took on a new dimension just after trumpeter, saxophonist and MC Marcus \u2018Tennishu\u2019 Tenney had released his own hiphop album. \u2018It was simply, \u201cYou got a big band and I got a rap album \u2013 let\u2019s put it together with Butcher Brown as the rhythm section and I\u2019ll rap the songs\u201d,\u2019 Tennishu says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-style-large\"><p><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ccp-primary-dark-color\">\u2018Like Miles Davis, what we put into our music represents the current times\u2019 <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"article-full-body sans-serif\">\u2018We\u2019ve been together for over ten years and we have trust in one another when we bring fresh ideas in. None of us wants to micromanage,\u2019 says drummer Corey Fonville. Everyone has wide-ranging taste.
