I loved the idea that a week of music could be contained in a single seed. It\u2019s something that has stayed with me. Should you ever see a \u2018play me \u2013 I\u2019m yours\u2019 piano at a shopping centre, someone at some point is sure to sit down and tap out a little Einaudi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\"><span class=\"&quot;s1&quot;\">But Einaudi\u2019s greatest achievement is the re-popularisation of the celebrity pianist-composer, developing the legacy left by <strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/franz-liszt\/&quot;\">Liszt<\/a><\/strong>. Whereas the Hungarian virtuoso pushed the newly invented piano to its limits, the strings are more likely to remain intact after an Einaudi concert. As Einaudi signed a group of breathless teenagers\u2019 scores, one girl proffered her arm and insisted the composer inked it. After a moment\u2019s hesitation, he obliged. \u2018I will get tattoo,\u2019 the young woman assured me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\"><span class=\"&quot;s1&quot;\">I remind Einaudi about this incident, wondering whether it was unusual. \u2018I have met several people who have my notes tattooed on them,\u2019 he comments, apparently both pleased and mildly embarrassed. The music\u2019s accessibility means that Einaudi\u2019s fans aren\u2019t just listeners \u2013 they are often players as well. Scores are as highly anticipated as the album release. It\u2019s a model that has gone on to inspire dozens of others \u2013 Yiruma, Stephan Moccio and Joep Beving, to name a few, sell sheet music alongside records, supported by concerts of their own pieces. \u2018I am now one in a forest of pianists who work in this way,\u2019 agrees Einaudi. \u2018It was an interesting time when I first started, as there were still music shops and they didn\u2019t know where to place my music \u2013 is it classical or pop?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\"><span class=\"&quot;s1&quot;\">There may be fewer music shops today, but labelling Einaudi\u2019s music remains as contentious as it was 20 years ago. \u2018Of course there are lots of people who don\u2019t like my music \u2013 and I respect their opinion,\u2019 he says politely. \u2018But some people put on the internet that I pretend to write classical music \u2013 what does that mean?\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\"><span class=\"&quot;s1&quot;\">American composer Nico Muhly is similarly baffled by the industry\u2019s insistence on categorisation. \u2018Reviewers and previewers get an enormous pass if they can describe a composer\u2019s work as being part of some sort of genre: post-minimalist, new complexity, Darmstadt School, chamber pop, whatever, or this new hellery, \u201cIndie-Classical\u201d,\u2019 writes Muhly. And woe betide any composer, be it Muhly, Anna Meredith or Einaudi, who moves between those brackets. The problem is compounded when the artist is commercially successful. To millions of fans, Einaudi is currently the world\u2019s greatest pianist-composer. And the Rolling Stones!\u2019 His paternal grandfather was Luigi Einaudi, the second president of Italy (1948-55), and his father was a notable publisher. The varied cultural diet had a big impact on the teenage Einaudi. \u2018I loved rock music, folk and classical \u2013 I honestly couldn\u2019t choose between these types of music as they all gave me something. I couldn\u2019t say \u201cI love Chopin so I will throw away The Beatles\u201d.\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\"><span class=\"&quot;s1&quot;\">After graduating from Milan\u2019s Conservatory, he continued studying composition with Luciano Berio and was awarded a scholarship to the Tanglewood Music Festival. \u2018When I started to make my own music I wanted to bring all these influences into one career,\u2019 he reflects. \u2018I composed piano ballades that were in the tradition of classical composers \u2013 songs without words \u2013 but that used harmony from the rock-pop tradition. It wasn\u2019t a precise plan and I didn\u2019t know what would happen. Both this and <i>I Giorni<\/i> (\u2018The Days<i>\u2019,<\/i> 2001) benefitted from air time on Classic\u00a0FM and, at a time before streaming, Einaudi\u2019s music became some of the most frequently requested. In 2011, Radio 1 DJ Greg James described how he revised at university while listening to Einaudi and began playing the piano music on the show as part of the station\u2019s support for students. The title track from <i>I Giorni<\/i> was subsequently downloaded so many times that it entered the Official Singles <\/span><span class=\"&quot;s2&quot;\">Chart Top 40 and the pianist was invited to <\/span><span class=\"&quot;s1&quot;\">perform in a special Radio 1 Piano Session. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\"><span class=\"&quot;s1&quot;\">Einaudi has continued to break new ground: <i>In a Time Lapse<\/i> (2013) became the first classical release to sell more digital downloads than physical copies. With the exception of Elton John, no other pianist is capable of selling out multiple dates for large venues on the same scale. When he comes to the UK in the spring, the 66\u00a0year-old will perform three nights at Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith and two at Alexandra Palace. His London residency will be interspersed with a performance at Manchester O2 Apollo, a date that has been rescheduled due to the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\"><span class=\"&quot;s1&quot;\">The cover of Einaudi\u2019s latest album, <i>Underwater<\/i>, features a swan photographed by the composer himself. He increasingly turns to nature for inspiration. \u2018The more I live the more interested I am in having a relationship with nature rather than human beings,\u2019 he says, only half-jokingly. The first entirely solo album Einaudi has released in 20 years, it was written during a period of extended isolation and has an improvisatory style. \u2018I wrote every day and began to edit and refine sections as you would,\u2019 he says, \u2018but I found that I was not adding to the music. The best pieces were musical breaths; once I\u2019d exhaled, it was done.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\"><span class=\"&quot;s1&quot;\"><i>Underwater<\/i> follows on from <i>Cinema<\/i>, a compilation of Einaudi\u2019s greatest screen-writing hits. To date, he has written for 80 film and TV projects, including <i>The Intouchables<\/i>, <i>Nomadland<\/i> and <i>The Water Diviner<\/i>. He is also the unlikely creative behind the soundtrack to <i>This Is England<\/i>, a gritty, powerful British film (and subsequent TV spin-off) about skinheads and white supremacist culture in the 1980s. In between snippets of The Specials and The Smiths are dark piano melodies that perfectly track the on-screen trauma. It\u2019s bleakness that goes beyond the comfortable tunes in, say, <i>Nightbook<\/i> or <i>Seven Days Walking<\/i>, and reveals another side to the composer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\"><span class=\"&quot;s1&quot;\">What Einaudi\u2019s music means to so many listeners may be gathered through a glance at YouTube comments (he has over one million subscribers to his official <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCQxsahIsaO7_nDwVlFRMQiA&quot;\">YouTube channel<\/a>). \u2018As someone who suffers from mental health issues, I find this music so helpful,\u2019 says one writer, \u2018This music literally saved my life,\u2019 notes another. \u2018Ludovico is the pianist who made me start piano lessons at 44,\u2019 adds someone else, while a jovial commentator puts \u2018how many people came here as they need to knock out an essay\u2019. (That last one attracted over 2,000 likes.) <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\"><span class=\"&quot;s2&quot;\">It might not be the most harmonically adventurous or technically complex, but Einaudi\u2019s pianism heals, soothes, engages and encourages.
