Ravel\u2019s Bol\u00e9ro<\/em><\/h2>\nThough Great Britain has since tasted Winter Olympic gold medal success in curling and the skeleton bob, back in the 1970s and \u201980s, hopes rested entirely on figure skating: John Curry in 1976; Robin Cousins in 1980; and, most famously, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean in 1984. The music that accompanied them as they glided graciously to gold in Sarajevo was a shortened version of Ravel\u2019<\/a><\/strong>s Bol\u00e9ro<\/em>, whose climax saw the pair collapse dramatically onto the ice. An unprecedented number of sixes from the judges followed.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Rimsky-Korsakov\u2019s <em>Capriccio Espagnol<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Though everyone remembers <em>Bol\u00e9ro<\/em>, no-one wins an Olympic figure skating gold with just routine. In 1984, Torvill and Dean prefaced their Ravel with a <em>paso doble<\/em> danced to the sound of <strong><a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/nikolay-rimsky-korsakov\/"\">Rimsky-Korsakov<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s <em>Capriccio Espagnol<\/em> \u2013 a sythesised version, though, with no violin solo. In this instance, Dean played the part of a bull-fighter with Torvill as his cape. The judges loved this one too.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Fonteyn\u2019s <em>Pop Looks Bach<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Ask people who Sam Fonteyn is, or get them to whistle <em>Pop Looks Bach<\/em> and you\u2019ll probably get blank looks and shrugged shoulders. Ask them to sing the BBC <em>Ski Sunday<\/em> theme tune, however, and you\u2019re in business. Fonteyn wrote his catchy piece for bustling strings and triumphant timps for Boosey and Hawkes in 1970, eight years before <em>Ski Sunday<\/em> brought downhill and slalom to our TV screens. As a choice for a theme tune it was inspired, however, instantly conjuring up images of snowy alpine slopes.<\/p>\n<iframe title=\""SKI\" sunday=\"\" theme=\"\" tune=\"\" width=\""200"\" height=\""150"\" src=\""https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jOEO_fgG3-I?feature=oembed"\" frameborder=\""0"\" allow=\""accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<h2>Richard Strauss\u2019s <em>An Alpine Symphony<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>And talking of alpine slopes\u2026 Though he himself hated sport, <strong><a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/richard-strauss\/"\">Richard Strauss<\/a><\/strong> boasted Winter Olympic credentials in different ways. His home, for instance, was in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, host of the games in 1936. And then, there\u2019s the fact that he both wrote and composed the <strong><a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/olympic-hymn-what-is-it-and-what-are-its-lyrics\/"\">Olympic Hymn<\/a><\/strong> for that year\u2019s Summer Olympic Games in Berlin. As has there been any finer musical depiction of all things mountainous that his dramatic and atmospheric <em>Alpine Symphony<\/em>, composed in 1915? We think not.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Waldteufel\u2019s <em>The Skaters\u2019 Waltz<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>The most famous work actually to depict a winter sport has to be this charming short waltz written in 1882 by the French composer Emile Waldteufel. Admittedly, it has the feel more of a family enjoying a jolly afternoon on a frozen lake than short-track speed skaters haring round and crashing into each other at fast speeds on an Olympic rink, but the \u2018weee bonk\u2019 motif heard regularly in the strings, as skaters fall on their backsides, could apply equally to both.<\/p>\n<iframe title=\""\u00c9mile\" waldteufel:=\"\" the=\"\" skater=\"\" waltz=\"\" width=\""200"\" height=\""113"\" src=\""https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wWuccFOyayU?feature=oembed"\" frameborder=\""0"\" allow=\""accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<h2>Sibelius\u2019s <em>Lonely Ski Trail<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>For skiers, meanwhile, there\u2019s <strong><a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/jean-sibelius\/"\">Sibelius<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s <em>Lonely Ski Trail<\/em> for strings, harp and narrator, composed in 1925. Cross-country rather than downhill skiing is very much what the Finnish composer had in mind, as his softly lugubrious music accompanies words that tell us about a trail that leads \u2018away into the depths of the forest\u2019 and \u2018over hills and steeps, over bogs where the new snow flies\u2019, with the skier\u2019s thoughts similarly heading into deeper, darker recesses.
