Film awards season is well and truly underway, with the (somewhat muted) Golden Globes ceremony having taken place in early January. The Globes often provide a good indicator as to what might do well at the Oscars, which take place in March. We\u2019ve taken a look at this year\u2019s Golden Globe winners<\/strong><\/a> and combined them with who we believe is going to be in the running for this year\u2019s Academy Award for Best Original Score<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Oscar for Best Original Score: our predictions<\/h2>\nSpencer (Jonny Greenwood)<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\nJonny Greenwood has had a superb year<\/strong><\/a>. He might be best known as the lead guitarist in British band Radiohead, but in recent years he\u2019s made quite the splash in the film music world. He\u2019s already got both an Academy Award and Golden Globe nomination to his name for his work on the 2017 film\u00a0Phantom Thread<\/em>, and this year he\u2019s certainly going to be in the mix again.<\/p>\n
Find out more about Jonny Greenwood\u2019s career and film music here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h3>Dune (Hans Zimmer)<\/h3>\n<p>It wouldn\u2019t be an Oscars predictions list without a couple of appearances from the Hollywood legend Hans Zimmer. For the epic sci-fi film adaptation of the 1965 novel by Frank Herbert, Zimmer brought together high-octane percussion with a female-heavy choir and electrifying strings. There\u2019s bags of drama \u2013 plenty of which was attained by creating new instrument sounds with synthesizers. \u2018We made up a\u00a0<em>lot\u00a0<\/em>of new instruments [with] some crazy synthesizers,\u2019 <a href=\""https:\/\/www.denofgeek.com\/movies\/how-hans-zimmer-brought-the-dune-soundtrack-to-life\/"\"><strong>Zimmer told <\/strong><\/a><a href=\""https:\/\/www.denofgeek.com\/movies\/how-hans-zimmer-brought-the-dune-soundtrack-to-life\/"\"><strong><em>Den of Geek.<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u2018There are sounds that are not of humanity. I mean, with some rhythms \u2013 there\u2019s no way a drummer could play that.\u2019<\/p>\n<iframe title=\""Dune\" official=\"\" main=\"\" trailer=\"\" width=\""200"\" height=\""113"\" src=\""https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8g18jFHCLXk?feature=oembed"\" frameborder=\""0"\" allow=\""accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<h3><a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/no-time-to-die-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-new-james-bond-soundtrack\/"\"><em>No Time to Die<\/em> (Hans Zimmer)<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s not a hugely exciting prediction given its illustrious history, but it\u2019s hard to avoid including <a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/hans-zimmer\/"\"><strong>Hans Zimmer<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s <a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/no-time-to-die-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-new-james-bond-soundtrack\/"\"><strong>score for the new James Bond film,\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><em><a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/no-time-to-die-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-new-james-bond-soundtrack\/"\"><strong>No Time To Die<\/strong><\/a>. <\/em>It\u2019s the first time Zimmer has been at the helm of the film franchise\u2019s music \u2013 and he was particularly proud of his involvement. Of all his dozens of other film scores, \u2018Bond beats them all,\u2019 he told reporters at the film\u2019s premiere.<\/p>\n<iframe title=\""NO\" time=\"\" to=\"\" die=\"\" trailer=\"\" in=\"\" cinemas=\"\" october=\"\" width=\""200"\" height=\""113"\" src=\""https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BIhNsAtPbPI?feature=oembed"\" frameborder=\""0"\" allow=\""accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<p>It\u2019s safe to assume that <a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/no-time-to-die-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-new-james-bond-soundtrack\/"\"><strong>Billie Eilish\u2019s song \u2018No Time To Die\u2019<\/strong><\/a> will definitely feature in the nominations for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. It might have been released a full two years before the film finally hit the big screen, but it captured the world\u2019s attention and set the perfect, melancholic, reflective opener for the final\u00a0<em>Bond\u00a0<\/em>film starring Daniel Craig as the eponymous hero.<\/p>\n<p>We named the <a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/best-hans-zimmer-film-scores\/"\"><strong>best scores by Zimmer here<\/strong><\/a> and the\u00a0<a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/best-bond-film-theme-tune\/"\"><strong>best James Bond theme tunes<\/strong><\/a> here.<\/p>\n<iframe title=\""Billie\" eilish=\"\" no=\"\" time=\"\" to=\"\" die=\"\" from=\"\" the=\"\" brit=\"\" awards=\"\" london=\"\" width=\""200"\" height=\""113"\" src=\""https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2I1ZU5g1QNo?feature=oembed"\" frameborder=\""0"\" allow=\""accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<h3>Power of the Dog (Jonny Greenwood)<\/h3>\n<p>It might be a double triumph for Jonny Greenwood this year. His score for Jane Campion\u2019s Western\u00a0<em>Power of the Dog\u00a0<\/em>uses a chamber ensemble of piano, strings, winds and brass to create a brooding, tormented soundworld, providing the perfect backdrop for the psychological unravelling of Benedict Cumberbatch\u2019s character Phil Burbank. While it is much smaller in scale than some of the other more grandiose and typically \u2018cinematic\u2019 scores, its racing acoustic guitar motif is not to be underestimated.<\/p>\n<iframe title=\""The\" power=\"\" of=\"\" the=\"\" dog=\"\" official=\"\" trailer=\"\" netflix=\"\" width=\""200"\" height=\""113"\" src=\""https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LRDPo0CHrko?feature=oembed"\" frameborder=\""0"\" allow=\""accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<h2>A couple that won\u2019t make the cut\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>Despite its powerful, timeless score\u00a0<a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/guide-2021-remake-west-side-story\/"\"><strong>Spielberg\u2019s Hollywood adaptation of <em>West Side Story<\/em><\/strong><\/a> will not receive a nomination in this category, due to the fact that eligibility is determined by the fact that the score needs to include 80% new musical material. This was also a stumbling block last year for <a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/ludovico-einaudi\/"\"><strong>Einaudi<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s <a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/nomadland-our-guide-to-ludovico-einaudis-soundtrack\/"\"><strong>soundtrack for <em>Nomadland<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, which featured tracks that had previously been written and published.<\/p>\n<p>This will also be the case for Lin-Manuel Miranda\u2019s directorial debut in <em><a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/tick-tick-boom-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-music-of-lin-manuel-mirandas-latest-film\/"\"><strong>tick, tick\u2026<\/strong><\/a><strong><a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/tick-tick-boom-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-music-of-lin-manuel-mirandas-latest-film\/"\"> BOOM!<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, which sees Jonathan Larson\u2019s autobiographical musical adapted for the big screen. It\u2019s been a busy year for <a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/vivo-soundtrack-who-wrote-the-music-to-the-netflix-animated-film-and-can-you-buy-the-soundtrack\/"\"><strong>Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also wrote the original songs for <em>Vivo<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, this year\u2019s animated musical comedy film about a Cuban honey bear\u2019s adventure to deliver a song to his owner\u2019s long-lost love.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p><\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Freya Parr Published: Tuesday, 08 February 2022 at 12:00 am Film awards season is well and truly underway, with the (somewhat muted) Golden Globes ceremony having taken place in early January.
