The winners of the 16th annual BBC Music Magazine Awards \u2013 the only classical music recording awards in which the main categories are voted for by the public \u2013 have been announced at a glittering ceremony at Kings Place in London.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Charlotte Smith<\/strong><\/a>, editor of BBC Music Magazine<\/em> adds: \u2018This is a monumental triumph from an artist recognised for pushing himself to the limits of musical achievement. Levit\u2019s playing is humane and nuanced in the Shostakovich, a work inspired by Bach\u2019s Well-Tempered Clavier<\/em> \u2013 and in the Stevenson he navigates the intense and epic score in remarkable style.\u2019<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s Personality of the Year<\/strong> goes to BBC Music Magazine March issue cover star Nicky Spence<\/a>. <\/strong>The tenor has been a true force for good over the last 12 months \u2013 from his high calibre operatic performances, to volunteering as a vaccinator during the pandemic and his Sky Arts show Anyone Can Sing<\/em>, it has been an incredible year.<\/p>\n

Tenor Freddie De Tommaso<\/strong> has won the Newcomer Award<\/strong> for his beautiful debut album Passione<\/em> of tenor arias by Puccini,<\/a><\/strong> Tosti et al. Sung in the tradition of De Tomasso\u2019s hero Franco Corelli, the recording is stylish and heartfelt, spinning gold out of the simplest of popular Italian songs.<\/p>\n

The Vocal Award<\/strong> has gone to soprano Kater\u030cina Kne\u030cz\u030ci\u0301kova\u0301<\/strong>\u2019s delightful album Phidyle<\/em><\/strong>, <\/strong>which showcases her ravishing tone in orchestra-accompanied songs.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s Orchestral Award<\/strong> goes to the Sinfonia of London and conductor John Wilson <\/a><\/strong>for their recording of Dutilleux<\/strong>\u2018s Le Loup<\/em><\/strong>, while the Choral Award <\/strong>goes to emotive performances of JS Bach<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s Cantatas<\/strong>, BWV 32, 82 & 106 by the Dunedin Consort.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Chamber Award<\/strong> goes to Ravel<\/a> and Saint-Sae\u0308ns<\/a> Piano Trios <\/strong>by the Sitkovetsky Trio, <\/strong>and the Concerto Award <\/strong>has been awarded to violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, <\/strong>cellist Sol Gabetta <\/strong>and Camerata Bern\u2019<\/strong>s adventurous disc Plaisirs illumine\u0301s.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Opera Award <\/strong>has been given to composer Philip Glass<\/a>\u2019s Akhnaten<\/em>, <\/strong>performed by Anthony Roth Costanzo, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Karen Kamensek.<\/p>\n

Finally, the Premiere Award<\/strong> goes to The Jukebox Album<\/em>, <\/strong>including works by Cheryl Frances-Hoad, Clarice Assad, Jesse Montgomery and performed by violinist Elena Urioste <\/strong>and pianist Tom Poster. <\/strong>The jury praised the recording for its genre-busting performances, inspired by a lockdown project which helped to spread the joy of music far and wide.<\/p>\n
