Blake was inspired by the legend of Jesus visiting England, in particular Glastonbury, with relative Joseph of Arimatheia. In 2009 this legend was explored in the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/jesus-may-have-visited-uk-1827263.html&quot;\">documentary \u2018<em>And Did Those Feet\u2019<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Over a century later in 1916, composer Hubert Parry set the poem to music to raise Britain\u2019s morale as life was bleak with <strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/what-was-impact-world-war-one-music\/&quot;\">World War One<\/a> <\/strong>raging and casualties mounting.<\/p>\n<p>Today it is often proposed as an alternative national anthem for England instead of <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/god-save-the-queen-lyrics\/&quot;\">\u2018God Save The Queen\u2019<\/a>, and is often used to celebrate English achievements in sporting events such the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/sport\/commonwealth-games\/commonwealth-games-jerusalem-national-anthem-why-british-athletes-gb-god-save-queen-a8287866.html&quot;\">Commonwealth Games<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We named \u2018Jerusalem\u2019 one of the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/best-hymns-of-all-time\/&quot;\">greatest hymns of all time<\/a><\/p>\n<h1>What are the lyrics to \u2018Jerusalem\u2019?<\/h1>\n<p>And did those feet in ancient time<br\/>\nWalk upon England\u2019s mountains green?<br\/>\nAnd was the holy Lamb of God<br\/>\nOn England\u2019s pleasant pastures seen?<\/p>\n<p>And did the Countenance Divine<br\/>\nShine forth upon our clouded hills?<br\/>\nAnd was Jerusalem builded here<br\/>\nAmong these dark Satanic mills?<\/p>\n<p>Bring me my bow of burning gold:<br\/>\nBring me my arrows of desire:<br\/>\nBring me my spear: O clouds unfold!<br\/>\nBring me my chariot of fire.<\/p>\n<p>I will not cease from mental fight,<br\/>\nNor shall my sword sleep in my hand<br\/>\nTill we have built Jerusalem<br\/>\nIn England\u2019s green and pleasant land.<\/p>\n<iframe title=\"&quot;BBC\" proms=\"\" hubert=\"\" parry:=\"\" jerusalem=\"\" elgar=\"\" width=\"&quot;200&quot;\" height=\"&quot;113&quot;\" src=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sERiPuOQyvo?feature=oembed&quot;\" frameborder=\"&quot;0&quot;\" allow=\"&quot;accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Why is \u2018Jerusalem\u2019 sung at Women\u2019s Institute meetings?<\/h2>\n<p>The hymn came to be associated with the Women\u2019s Institute (WI) because of suffragette Millicent Fawcett. She asked if it could be used for the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/janerobinsonauthor.wordpress.com\/2013\/06\/26\/jerusalem-and-the-womens-institute\/&quot;\">Women\u2019s Sufferage Movement<\/a> and in 1918\u00a0 a band of women sung the hymn at a suffrage rally taking place at the Royal Albert Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Then in the early 1920s one of the founders of the WI, and fellow suffragette, Grace Hadow came up with the idea of using the hymn as the WI\u2019s anthem.
