They are awarded in the fields of painting, sculpture, architecture, music, and theatre\/film \u2013 areas of cultural endeavour not represented by Nobel Prizes. Each laureate receives a prize of 15 million Yen, or around \u00a3100,000.<\/p>\n<p>The recognition is the latest in a long succession of awards for Zimerman, who began his career with a brace of first prizes \u2013 at the 1974 Prokofiev Competition and the 1975 International Chopin Piano Competition, both in his native Poland.<\/p>\n<p>The Praemium Imperiale award comes as Zimerman marks the 140th anniversary of his fellow Pole, the composer <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/reviews\/monthly-choice\/szymanowski-choral-works-performed-warsaw-philharmonic-orchestra-and-choir\/&quot;\"><strong>Karol Szymanowski<\/strong><\/a>. Zimerman has completed a new recording of the latter\u2019s works for piano, released on the Deutsche Grammophon label earlier this year. <em>Karol Szymanowski: Piano Works<\/em> features a selection of Mazurkas\u00a0and\u00a0Masques\u00a0spanning some 25 years of Szymanowski\u2019s career, from 1899 to the mid 1920s.<\/p>\n<p>Across his career, Zimerman has recorded and performed with many of the greatest conductors, including <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/karajan-conducting-five-fantastic-karajan-moments\/&quot;\"><strong>Herbert von Karajan<\/strong><\/a>, <strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/timeline-leonard-bernstein\/&quot;\">Leonard Bernstein<\/a><\/strong> and Seiji Ozawa. This ensemble brought together talented Polish musicians for a focus on their greatest national composer. A display of 100 million handmade and painted porcelain sunflower seeds, the artwork memorably filled Tate Modern\u2019s vast Turbine Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Also in receipt of this year\u2019s prize is German filmmaker Wim Wenders, whose multi-award-winning feature films have included <em>Paris, Texas<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Wings of Desire<\/em> and the Oscar-nominated\u00a0<em>Buena Vista Social Club<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a 2022 Grant for Young Artists, awarded to the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.kronbergacademy.de\/&quot;\"><strong>Kronberg Academy Foundation<\/strong><\/a>, the German chamber music academy that offers advanced training for exceptionally gifted young violin, viola, cello and piano performers.<\/p>\n<p>The Academy was established in 1993 by Marta Casals Istomin \u2013 widow of the great Pablo Casals, one of the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/six-best-cellists\/&quot;\"><strong>greatest cellists of all time<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 along with cellists Raimund Trenkler and <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/mstislav-rostropovich-essential-recordings\/&quot;\"><strong>Mstislav Rostropovich<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<section class=\"&quot;highlight\"><div class=\"&quot;highlight__content\" editor-content=\"\"> \n<ul><li><strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/best-cello-works\/&quot;\">Six of the best cello works<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/six-of-the-best-recordings-of-elgars-cello-concerto\/&quot;\">Six of the best recordings of Elgar\u2019s Cello Concerto<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul><p> <\/p><\/div> <\/section><p>Today, it regularly welcomes world-renowned musicians such as Gidon Kremer, Andra\u0301s Schiff and Daniel Barenboim as special lecturers.
