<\/p>
The Queen\u2019s funeral took place in Westminster Abbey on Monday 19 September. Elizabeth was the first British monarch to have her funeral in the abbey since George II in 1760.<\/p>\n
On the morning of the funeral, the Queen\u2019s coffin was carried from Westminster Hall, where it had lain in state for several days, to Westminster Abbey. The arrival of the coffin occurred at 11am, and was followed by two minutes\u2019 silence.<\/p>\n
After the funeral, the coffin was carried on a procession to Hyde Park Corner. It was then transported by hearse to Windsor Castle, which is where British sovereigns are laid to rest in the royal vault.<\/p>\n
Hymns sung at the Queen\u2019s funeral included \u2018The Lord\u2019s My Shepherd\u2019<\/a><\/strong>, a favourite hymn of Elizabeth\u2019s<\/a><\/strong>. The choir and congregation also sang \u2018The day Thou Gavest, Lord, is Ended\u2019<\/a><\/strong> by was written by Reverend John Ellerton in 1870, and it is set to the tune\u00a0St Clement,<\/em> believed to have been composed by Reverend Clement Cotteril Scholefield. This popular hymn featured in our list of the the\u00a0best hymns ever<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n The final hymn that was sung at the Queen\u2019s funeral was \u2018Love Divine, All Loves Excelling\u2019<\/strong><\/a>, written by the well-known Methodist leader Charles Wesley.<\/p>\n <\/p><\/div> <\/section> Before the service began, Westminster Abbey\u2019s assistant organist Matthew Jorysz played a selection of music including the Romanza <\/em>(slow movement) from Vaughan Williams\u2019 Symphony No.5.<\/em><\/p>\n During the service itself, the choir sang Psalm 42 (\u2018Like as the hart desireth the water-brooks: so longeth my soul after thee, O God), in a new musical arrangement composed especially for the service by Judith Weir.<\/p>\n We also heard an Anthem by composer James MacMillan, once again especially composed for the Queen\u2019s funeral. MacMillan set his Anthem music to a section from the Bible\u2019s Epistle to the Romans, beginning, \u2018Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?\u2019.<\/p>\n After the service, we heard the Allegro Maestoso from Elgar\u2019s Organ Sonata, opus 28.<\/p>\n <\/p><\/div> <\/section> Westminster Abbey choirmaster James O\u2019Donnell<\/a><\/strong> was responsible for the music. He also conducted the Westminster Abbey choir<\/a><\/strong> at the Queen\u2019s funeral. The organ, meanwhile, was played by Peter Holder, the abbey\u2019s sub-organist<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n Funeral marches <\/strong><\/a>were played during the processions by bands, including HM Royal Marines. The list of funeral marches to be played includes those by Mendelssohn and Chopin, plus Beethoven\u2019s three B flat minor Funeral Marches.<\/p>\n <\/p><\/div> <\/section> The Duke of Edinburgh\u2019s funeral<\/strong><\/a>, which took place with COVID-19 social distancing restrictions, was a pared-back affair without singing, but music still played a key role in the service.
