To celebrate the 150^{th<\/sup> anniversary of}Vaughan Williams\u2019<\/strong><\/a> birth (12 October, 2022), violinist Hyeyoon <\/span>Park and pianist Benjamin Grosvenor<\/strong><\/a> have now released a new version of the original arrangement for solo violin and piano.<\/p>\n
You can see the duo performing The Lark Ascending<\/em> in the clip below:<\/p>\n\n\u00a0<\/p>\nThe Lark Ascending <\/i>was<\/span>\u00a0inspired by George Meredith\u2019s 1881 poem of the same name, a paean to the flight and song of the skylark. With the timbre of the piano, it is\u00a0<\/span>somehow<\/span>\u00a0l<\/span>ike a black and white photograph \u2013\u00a0<\/span>creating<\/span> new perspectives and different atmospheres.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\nThe violinist also describes her quest to witness the <\/span>the natural phenomenon that inspired the work: the song of the skylark. <\/span><\/p>\n\u2018I <\/span>had the happy fortune\u00a0<\/span>to do so on a long Kentish walk in June\u00a0<\/span>over the Jubilee weekend<\/span>. When I was starting to get tired<\/span>, I took a rest in a vast field. There was a trill-like, piercing song and as I looked up, a small bird was ascending level by level while maintaining an elaborate cry. <\/span><\/p>\n\u2018When it reached a great height \u2013 remarkable for such a small bird \u2013 it hovered freely, as if finally unfettered after the arduous climb and fond of the <\/span>view\u00a0<\/span>of its little kingdom.
