Martha Argerich is known as one of the finest pianists in the history of classical music, with her performances \u2013 in particular \u2013 of Schumann, Prokofiev, Chopin, Ravel<\/strong><\/a> and Rachmaninov commonly topping the \u2018best ever performance\u2019 lists. But who is Martha Argerich? Where was she born, and whom did she study under?<\/p>\n

Read on for our guide to this revered performer.<\/p>\n\n<h2>When and where was Martha Argerich born?<\/h2>\n<p>Martha Argerich was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1941. Her family on her father\u2019s side were from Catalonia, in north-eastern Spain: however, they had settled in Argentina in the 18th century. Martha\u2019s maternal grandparents, meanwhile, were Jewish immigrants from the Russian Empire, who had settled in Argentina at the end of the 19th century.<\/p>\n<h3>Did Martha Argerich have a musical upbringing?<\/h3>\n<p>Yes: in fact, Argerich showed great promise from a very early age. She performed <a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/mozart-piano-concertos-best-recordings\/"\"><strong>Mozart\u2019s\u00a0Piano Concerto No. 20<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in D minor and\u00a0Beethoven\u2019s First Piano Concerto\u00a0in\u00a0C major. <sup id=\""cite_ref-13"\" class=\""reference"\"\/>A little later, in 1955, Martha\u2019s family moved to Europe, allowing Martha to study piano in Austria with the great classical and jazz pianist <a title=\""Friedrich\" gulda=\"\" href=\""https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Friedrich_Gulda"\"><strong>Friedrich Gulda<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She also had lessons with pianists\u00a0Abbey Simon\u00a0and\u00a0Nikita Magaloff,\u00a0as well as Madeleine Lipatti (widow of the pianist Dinu Lipatti).<sup id=\""cite_ref-8"\" class=\""reference"\"\/> The year 1957 was a red-letter one for the young pianist: aged just 16, Argerich won both the Geneva International Music Competition\u00a0and the\u00a0Ferruccio Busoni International Competition\u00a0within three weeks of each other.<sup id=\""cite_ref-10"\" class=\""reference"\"\/><\/p>\n<iframe title=\""Liszt,\" hungarian=\"\" rhapsody=\"\" no.6=\"\" martha=\"\" argerich=\"\" width=\""200"\" height=\""150"\" src=\""https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LhInwkq4nAw?feature=oembed"\" frameborder=\""0"\" allow=\""accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<p>Not everything was plain sailing during this time, however. Argerich had a frustrating time trying to study with the great, but reclusive and enigmatic pianist <strong><a title=\""Arturo\" benedetti=\"\" michelangeli=\"\" href=\""https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Arturo-Benedetti-Michelangeli"\">Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli<\/a><\/strong>, who gave her only four lessons over the course of a year and a half. After that, the young Argerich was off to New York, hoping to study with her pianistic hero <strong><a title=\""Vladimir\" horowitz=\"\" href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/artists\/vladimir-horowitz-through-eyes-todays-pianists\/"\">Vladimir Horowitz<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 but this did not bear fruit either.<sup id=\""cite_ref-11"\" class=\""reference"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Discouraged, Argerich abandoned the piano for three years and toyed with giving up altogether. However, she did eventually return \u2013 and in some style, winning the VII International Chopin Piano Competition in 1965 at the age of 24.<\/p>\n<h3>When did Martha Argerich make her first recording?<\/h3>\n<p>The pianist made her first recording in 1960, aged just 19.<\/p>\n<p>The recording featured works by <a title=\""Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric\" chopin=\"\" href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/chopins-legacy-the-enduring-appeal-of-the-remarkable-composer\/"\"><strong>Chopin<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\""Johannes\" brahms=\"\" href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/brahms-style-guide\/"\"><strong>Brahms<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\""Maurice\" ravel=\"\" href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/best-maurice-ravel\/"\"><strong>Ravel<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<strong><a title=\""Sergei\" prokofiev=\"\" href=\""https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sergei_Prokofiev"\">Prokofiev<\/a><\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong><a title=\""Franz\" liszt=\"\" href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/works\/five-essential-works-liszt\/"\">Liszt<\/a><\/strong>, and was a critical success.\u00a0 \u00a0 Over the decades since, Martha Argerich has recorded works by a wide range of composers, with the Romantic era a speciality. Argerich has chosen to stay out of the limelight for much of her career.
