Today it is one of the UK\u2019s most beloved patriotic hymns and is sung during various ceremonial occasions.<\/p>\n<h3>O God our Help in Ages Past<\/h3>\n<p>The hymn \u2018<strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/o-god-our-help-in-ages-past-lyrics\/&quot;\">O God our Help in Ages Past<\/a><\/strong>\u2018 is a favourite for remembrance ceremonies and is always sung at the annual Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph in London. Written in 1708 by Isaac Watts, it was inspired by Psalm 90 and has a strong message of \u00a0promise and hope.<\/p>\n<h3>O Valiant Hearts<\/h3>\n<p>Written by Sir John Stanhope Arkwright to remember the fallen of the First World War, \u2018O Valiant Hearts\u2019 was published in <i>The Supreme Sacrifice, and other Poems in Time of War<\/i> (1919).\u00a0<sup id=\"&quot;cite_ref-sop1933_1-0&quot;\" class=\"&quot;reference&quot;\"\/>It is usually sung to a tune composed by the Reverend Dr Charles Harris, but other composers including <strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/ralph-vaughan-williams\/&quot;\">Vaughan Williams<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0have also set the words to music.<\/p>\n<h3>Dear Lord And Father Of Mankind<\/h3>\n<p>The popular hymn \u2018<strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/dear-lord-and-father-of-mankind-lyrics\/&quot;\">Dear Lord and Father of Mankind<\/a><\/strong>\u2019 was adapted from Quaker John Greenleaf Whittier\u2019s poem \u2018The Brewing of Soma\u2019 (which he wrote in 1872) by Garrett Horder and was published in his 1884 <i>Congregational Hymns.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"&quot;gamma\" no-margin=\"\"><span class=\"&quot;artist&quot;\">Eternal Father, Strong To Save\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u2018<strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/eternal-father-strong-to-save-for-those-in-peril-on-the-sea-lyrics\/&quot;\">Eternal Father, Strong to Save<\/a><\/strong>\u2019, was written in 1860 by William Whiting after he was inspired by Psalm 107 and its reference to ships and the sea.
