\u2018Yma o Hyd\u2019 has been chosen as the official 2022 football World Cup song for the Wales men\u2019s team.<\/p>\n

What is \u2018Yma o Hyd\u2019 and who is it by?<\/h2>\n
\u2018Yma o Hyd\u2019, whose title translates as \u2018We\u2019re Still Here\u2019 in English, is by Welsh composer Dafydd Iwan. It has been sung as a proud celebration of Welsh language, history and culture for almost four decades. It\u2019s often heard alongside \u2018Men of Harlech\u2019, which is played as the Cardiff players walk out on to the pitch. We\u2019ve got the <a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/men-of-harlech-lyrics\/"\"><strong>lyrics to \u2018Men of Harlech\u2019<\/strong><\/a> elsewhere on our site.<\/p>\n<h3>Who is Dafydd Iwan?<\/h3>\n<p>\u2018Yma o Hyd\u2019 was written by Welsh composer Dafydd Iwan (full name Dafydd Iwan Jones), a\u00a0Welsh\u00a0singer and\u00a0nationalist politician who earned himself a name for writing and performing Welsh-language <strong><a title=\""Folk\" music=\"\" href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-folk-music\/"\">folk music<\/a><\/strong> during the 1960s and 1970s. Iwan has also been a prominent member of Cymdeithas ar leith Gymraeg, a pressure group campaigning for the rights of Welsh people to use the Welsh language in their everyday lives.<\/p>\n<p>From 2003 to 2010, Iwan was the president of Plaid Cymru, the political party which supports Welsh independence\u00a0from the UK.<\/p>\n<h3>What do the lyrics of \u2018Yma o Hyd\u2019 mean?<\/h3>\n<p>\u2018Yma o Hyd\u2019 is a\u00a0song about the survival of Welsh culture and language.
