The Awards season is well and truly underway. Hot on the heels of the 80th Golden Globes just last week, the list of nominees for this year\u2019s BAFTA Film Awards have been revealed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Both the Globes and the BAFTAs are seen as a sure insight into how the Academy Awards list will shape up \u2013 those Oscar nominees will be announced on Tuesday (24 January).<\/p>\n

The Original Score BAFTA winner can never be second guessed; some years it aligns with the Oscar that follows (or vice versa) and some years it really surprises. Five scores are up for the gong this year; here\u2019s a rundown\u2026<\/p>\n

2023 BAFTA Music Nominees<\/h2>\n
Babylon<\/strong><\/em>Justin Hurwitz<\/h3>\n\n<p style=\""font-weight:\">It was composer Justin Hurwitz who took home the Golden Globe last week for his music for this sparklingly colourful take on the dizzy excesses of life in early Hollywood, directed by Damien Chazelle. Hurwitz has form, too, with a previous <strong><a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/winners-of-bafta-for-best-original-score-all-the-winning-and-nominated-soundtracks-from-history\/"\">BAFTA<\/a> <\/strong>win and two <strong><a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/all-the-oscar-winners-and-nominees-for-best-original-score\/"\">Oscars<\/a> <\/strong>for Chazelle\u2019s <em>La La Land<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><em>All Quiet on the Western Front<br\/><\/em><\/strong>Volker Bertelmann<\/h3>\n<iframe title=\""All\" quiet=\"\" on=\"\" the=\"\" western=\"\" front=\"\" remains=\"\" volker=\"\" bertelmann=\"\" a=\"\" netflix=\"\" film=\"\" width=\""200"\" height=\""150"\" src=\""https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RQzjP7IrTlw?feature=oembed"\" frameborder=\""0"\" allow=\""accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" web-share=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<p style=\""font-weight:\">This riveting <strong><a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/what-was-impact-world-war-one-music\/"\">World War One<\/a><\/strong> film has an impressive 14 nominations, and Bertelman\u2019s uncompromising, contemporary music might well scoop the score prize. Formerly better known as \u2018Hauschka\u2019, Bertelmann has been making his mark as a film composer and has previously been nominated for both a BAFTA and an Oscar for his 2016 score for <em>Lion <\/em>(jointly with Dustin O\u2019Halloran). They recently impressed with their score for Francis Lee\u2019s\u00a0<em>Ammonite<\/em>, though this score is very much Bertelmann\u2019s.<\/p>\n<h3><em><strong>The Banshees of Inisherin<br\/><\/strong><\/em>Carter Burwell<\/h3>\n<iframe title=\""The\" banshees=\"\" of=\"\" inisherin=\"\" carter=\"\" burwell=\"\" original=\"\" score=\"\" album=\"\" cue=\"\" sampler=\"\" width=\""200"\" height=\""113"\" src=\""https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pzeCNXy8f40?feature=oembed"\" frameborder=\""0"\" allow=\""accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" web-share=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<p style=\""font-weight:\">Very much a frontrunner with ten nominations, this unusual and evocative comedy drama won the Golden Globe for Best Picture \u2013 Musical or Comedy, plus an acting gong for Colin Farrell. Carter Burwell remains one of cinema\u2019s most inventive composers and has been crafting beautifully simmering and quietly brilliant scores for decades.<\/p>\n<p style=\""font-weight:\">His most recent nominations have been for <em>Carol <\/em>and <em>Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri<\/em> This score is no exception, typically curious and atmospheric. A composer who is yet to win big, perhaps Burwell\u2019s time has come at last?<\/p>\n<h3><strong><em>Everything Everywhere All At Once<br\/><\/em><\/strong>Son Lux<\/h3>\n<iframe title=\""Son\" lux:=\"\" everything=\"\" everywhere=\"\" all=\"\" at=\"\" once=\"\" score=\"\" tease=\"\" a24=\"\" width=\""200"\" height=\""150"\" src=\""https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/E25E9cbwNyg?feature=oembed"\" frameborder=\""0"\" allow=\""accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" web-share=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<p style=\""font-weight:\">One of the big surprises of the year is this multi-dimensional (quite literally) film from Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. It has won the hearts of audiences and critics alike, and now awards juries, too, with wins at the Globes for actoes Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan. It\u2019s a high-profile debut, then, for Son Lux (aka Rafiq Bhatia, Ryan Lott and Ian Chang), the band behind the ultra-contemporary, seeringly emotional soundscapes. With a total of ten nominations, it could be the surprise winner of the night.<\/p>\n<h3><em><strong>Guillermo del Toro\u2019s Pinnochio<\/strong><br\/><\/em>Alexandre Desplat<\/h3>\n<iframe title=\""A\" jigsaw=\"\" of=\"\" themes:=\"\" the=\"\" original=\"\" score=\"\" guillermo=\"\" del=\"\" toro=\"\" pinocchio=\"\" netflix=\"\" width=\""200"\" height=\""113"\" src=\""https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/s4s0W6omJ1o?feature=oembed"\" frameborder=\""0"\" allow=\""accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" web-share=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<p style=\""font-weight:\">Carter Burwell may be the longest serving composer on the list, but Alexandre Desplat is the most lauded, with two Oscars and three BAFTAs already on the mantle. Guillermo del Toro\u2019s gorgeous, heartfelt animated feature won a Golden Globe and is set to (surely) pick up further animation gongs. Desplat\u2019s contribution is far reaching, with a clutch of colourful original songs and a typically sweet and sweeping orchestral score. Might it be a fourth BAFTA for the Frenchman?<\/p>\n<section class=\""highlight\"> <div class=\""highlight__content\" editor-content=\"\"> \n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/best-20th-century-british-film-scores\/"\">Best 20th-century British film scores<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/top-film-composers-ever\/"\">Top 10 film composers \u2013 of all time<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/what-is-the-difference-between-a-film-score-and-film-soundtrack\/"\">What is the difference between a film score and film soundtrack?<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/how-many-female-film-composers-have-won-oscars\/"\">How many female film composers have won Oscars?<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> <\/p><\/div> <\/section> <p style=\""font-weight:\">Notably absent from the list is <strong><a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/williams-john\/"\">John Williams<\/a><\/strong>, whose score for Steven Spielberg\u2019s <em>The Fabelmans<\/em> was nominated for a Golden Globe. The film itself has equally been largely ignored in the other categories, save for a single nomination for Original Screenplay. Hildur Gudnod\u00f3ttir\u2019s <em>Women Talking<\/em> was also up for a Globe, though the film\u2019s UK release date (10 February) likely meant it couldn\u2019t be in the running for a BAFTA. She did win a Critics Choice Award for her contribution to <strong><a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/tv-and-film-music\/what-is-the-film-tar-about-and-when-is-it-released\/"\"><em>T\u00e1r<\/em><\/a><\/strong> last week, however.<\/p>\n<p style=\""font-weight:\"><em><br\/>\nThe 2023 EE BAFTA Film Awards take place on Sunday 19 February in London and will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 7pm.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\""font-weight:\"> <\/p><\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Michael Beek Published: Friday, 20 January 2023 at 12:00 am The Awards season is well and truly underway.
