It was a big night for the German film, which took hom seven prizes at last night\u2019s EE BAFTA Film Awards in London, one of which was for Original Score. <\/p>

With a whopping 14 nominations, Edward Berger\u2019s film of All Quiet on the Western Front<\/em> had the most to lose at last night\u2019s BAFTA Film Awards. But the German production left the Royal Festival Hall with its head held high, scooping seven of the coveted mask trophies \u2013 including the top prize, Best Film.<\/p>\n

One of its seven awards was for Original Score, awarded to German composer Volker Bertelmann, who underlined the unrelenting World War One<\/a><\/strong> drama with an intense, contemporary palette of sounds \u2013 including a memorably oppressive three-note motif.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\""font-weight:\">It marks Bertelmann\u2019s first BAFTA win, following a prior nomination at the 2017 awards for his score for <em>Lion<\/em>, a nomination he shared with Dustin O\u2019Halloran. His sights will be set on the Oscar next; his was one of the names included in the recent <a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/tv-and-film-music\/2023-oscar-nominees-announced\/"\">Oscar nominees announcement<\/a>. The winners of the US Academy Awards will be revealed on Sunday 19 March.<\/p>\n<p style=\""font-weight:\">The win is sure to be a career boon for the composer, who also performs his own expressionist piano works under the name Hauschka. That said, his rise on screen has been steady and impressive with a slew of impactful scores, including those for\u00a0<em>Hotel Mumbai, Summerland,<\/em> <em>Ammonite <\/em>(with Dustin O\u2019Halloran) and <em>The Current War<\/em> (with Dustin O\u2019Halloran). On the small screen he has written music for the likes of <em>Patrick Melrose<\/em>, <em>Life After Life\u00a0<\/em>and <em>Barbarians<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The other notable gong of the night was that for Leading Actress, awarded to Cate Blanchett for her portrayal of the fictional conductor-composer Lydia T\u00e1r. Blanchett\u2019s performance in Todd Field\u2019s gripping\u00a0<em>T\u00e1r\u00a0<\/em>has been creating an awards buzz for months.<\/p>\n<iframe title=\""T\u00c1R\" official=\"\" trailer=\"\" in=\"\" select=\"\" theaters=\"\" october=\"\" width=\""200"\" height=\""113"\" src=\""https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Na6gA1RehsU?feature=oembed"\" frameborder=\""0"\" allow=\""accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" web-share=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<p>In an emotional acceptance speech, the actor revealed just how much the role had taken out of her and thanked writer\/director Field, saying the experience had changed her life. The role saw her actually conduct the Dresden Philharmonic and play the piano on screen, all of which she told us about in a <a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/tv-and-film-music\/tar-cate-blanchett-on-portraying-a-conductor-in-new-psychodrama\/"\">recent interview for the January issue<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\""font-weight:\"><em>All Quite on the Western Front is available to watch now on Netflix, with Volker Bertelmann\u2019s music available to stream from the usual places.
