Our guide to one of the choirs that will be performing at King Charles’s coronation on 6 May 2023 <\/p>
The Monteverdi Choir is a specialist Baroque ensemble encompassing music from the Renaissance period<\/a><\/strong> to Classical music of the 20th century.<\/p>\n Sir John Eliot Gardiner<\/a><\/strong>, who founded the ensemble<\/p>\n Eliot Gardiner, one of the best conductors in the world<\/a><\/strong>, founded the choir in 1964 for a performance of Monteverdi<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s Vespro della Beata Vergine <\/i>in King\u2019s College Chapel, Cambridge, where he was studying History as an undergraduate. The aim was to introduce the colour of Italian music to audiences accustomed to the English choral tradition. Since then Gardier\u2019s ensembles have expanded to include the English Baroque Soloists and the Orchestra R\u00e9volutionnaire et Romantique.<\/p>\n They gave their first London concert at Crosby Hall, Chelsea in 1966, where their passion, virtuosity and strong sense of rhythmic propulsion immediately grabbed the public\u2019s attention. Within two years they were asked to give a performance at the BBC Proms<\/a><\/strong>, and from then on rapidly cemented their position as one of the best choirs in the country, working at the forefront of the Early Music revival.<\/p>\n A huge range, from well-known works by Monteverdi<\/a><\/strong>, Handel<\/a><\/strong>, J.S Bach<\/a><\/strong> and Mozart<\/a><\/strong> to lesser-known offerings from Gabrieli, Gesualdo<\/a><\/strong>, Sch\u00fctz, Buxtehude, Carissimi, Campra and Leclair.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n More Coronation composers:<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p><\/div> <\/section> No. As an early music enthusiast, who even sang with The Bach Choir for a time<\/a><\/strong>, King Charles<\/a><\/strong> has long been the Monteverdi Choir\u2019s patron, and in 2014 the choir performed at a gala performance at Buckingham Palace.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Although the details of what they will perform have not been released, we know that they will open the celebrations on 6 May, shortly before the king\u2019s arrival at Westminster Abbey. They will also sing throughout the Coronation Service<\/a><\/strong> alongside the Choir of Westminster Abbey<\/a><\/strong> and The Choir of His Majesty\u2019s Chapel Royal, St James\u2019s Palace, together with girl choristers from the Chapel Choir of Methodist College, Belfast and Truro Cathedral Choir.<\/p>\n On being asked to perform at the Coronation, Gardiner commented: \u2018It is a tremendous honour to have been asked by His Majesty to open the musical proceedings at his Coronation on Saturday 6 May.<\/p>\n \u2018As the former Prince of Wales, His Majesty has been a keen supporter and patron of the Monteverdi Choir, the English Baroque Soloists and the Orchestre R\u00e9volutionnaire et Romantique ever since he attended the launch of our Bach Cantata Pilgrimage in 1999.<\/p>\n \u2018This invitation is therefore a symbol of his continuing support and royal patronage as well as of the personal friendship he has extended towards me.
