theatres, musicians and performers sought refuge in backrooms of taverns and alehouses to vent their anarchy.<\/p>\n<p>Some four centuries later, the Barokksolistene created\u00a0 the Alehouse Sessions, a project in which they perform <strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-folk-music\/&quot;\">folk<\/a><\/strong> melodies, <strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/five-best-sea-shanties\/&quot;\">sea-shanties<\/a><\/strong>, bawdy ballads and cheeky ditties alongside ayres and dances by <strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/henry-purcell\/&quot;\">Purcell<\/a> <\/strong>and Playford in homage to the sonic world of 17th century tavern music.<\/p>\n<p>This spring (most likely 23 April), BBC4 brings The Alehouse Sessions to screens in a new film directed by Dominic Best, capturing the sound world of rebellious London under Oliver
