See whether you agree with them.<\/p>\n<h2>Best piano music<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Bach\u2019s 48 Preludes and Fugues (The Well-Tempered Clavier).<\/h3>\n<p>The basic essentials of the pianist\u2019s repertoire, the two books of Bach\u2019s 48 Preludes and Fugues (<strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/best-recordings-js-bachs-well-tempered-clavier\/&quot;\">The Well-Tempered Clavier<\/a><\/strong>) were completed in 1742, though they were not published in <a href=\"\/\/www.classical-music.com\/topic\/js-bach&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener noopener noreferrer\" noreferrer=\"\"><strong>Bach<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s lifetime. Intended as a work for students to play in all keys and in a wide range of styles and textures, they are now an indispensable part of every aspect of a pianist\u2019s training. <a href=\"\/\/www.classical-music.com\/topic\/robert-schumann&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener noopener noreferrer\" noreferrer=\"\"><strong>Schumann<\/strong><\/a> encouraged his readers to \u2018let the Well-Tempered Clavier be your daily bread\u2019.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2.<\/strong><a href=\"\/\/www.classical-music.com\/topic\/ludwig-van-beethoven&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener noopener noreferrer\" noreferrer=\"\"><strong> Beethoven<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s 32 Piano Sonatas<\/h3>\n<p>Written between 1795 and 1822, these us on a journey from <strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/joseph-haydn-2\/&quot;\">Haydn<\/a><\/strong> (to whom the first three are dedicated) to the future of music (the last three), constituting the first body of serious, substantial piano music suitable for large concert halls. They \u2018gradually became the basis of the public repertoire for any pianist with pretensions to serious musicianship\u2019, as wrote pianist Charles Rosen.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Schubert\u2019s Impromptus<\/h3>\n<iframe title=\"&quot;Alfred\" brendel=\"\" schubert=\"\" four=\"\" impromptus=\"\" d=\"\" width=\"&quot;200&quot;\" height=\"&quot;113&quot;\" src=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/24DugWBRkYg?feature=oembed&quot;\" frameborder=\"&quot;0&quot;\" allow=\"&quot;accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" web-share=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<p>Schubert Impromptus Composed in 1827, the penultimate year of <strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/franz-schubert\/&quot;\">Schubert<\/a><\/strong>\u2018s life,\u00a0this set of eight piano pieces is considered to be one of the finest examples of early Romantic music, with many of the eight pieces finding their way into movies, or providing inspiration for subsequent composers.<\/p>\n<p>The third impromptu in G flat major is probably the best known of the set, its serene yet sobbing <strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/musical-terms\/what-is-a-melody\/&quot;\">melody<\/a><\/strong> painted in countless shades of grey by pianists from Vladimir Horowitz to Alfred Brendel. Brahms Intermezzi<\/h3>\n<p>These three solo piano works, composed by <strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/johannes-brahms\/&quot;\">Brahms<\/a><\/strong> in 1892, are known for their capacity to express emotions of astonishing intensity through the sotto voce purr of a lullaby.<\/p>\n<p>Brahms himself described them as \u2018cradle songs for my sorrows\u2019, prefacing them in the score with two lines of poetry from a Scottish poem translated into German by Johann Gottfried von Herder: \u2018Sleep softly, my child, sleep softly and well! It grieves me so to see you weep.\u2019 But what sorrows was Brahms referencing exactly? Perhaps his unfulfilled, enduring love for the pianist and composer <strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/clara-schumann-6\/&quot;\">Clara Schumann,<\/a><\/strong> who, as Brahms\u2019s friend and confidante of forty years, was destined as the first pianist to see these pieces.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Chopin\u2019s \u00c9tudes<\/h3>\n<p>Until <strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/frederic-chopin\/&quot;\">Chopin<\/a><\/strong> came along, piano \u00c9tudes were purely utilitarian exercises, intended solely for the improvement of technique. In Chopin\u2019s hands, however, they became artistic masterpieces \u2013 one of the piano repertoire\u2019s most defining works, that have since embedded themselves in popular culture.<\/p>\n<p>Most popular among them are Op. 10 No. 3 (\u2018L\u2019Adieu); \u2018Op. 10, No.12 (\u2018Revolutionary \u00c9tude\u2019; Op 10. No. 5 (\u2018Black Keys\u2019; and Op. 25, No. 11 (\u2018Winter Wind\u2019) \u2013 the latter of which prompted one editor to write: \u2018Small-souled men, no matter how agile their fingers, should avoid it.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>6. Jan\u00e1\u010dek\u2019s In the Mists<\/h3>\n<iframe title=\"&quot;Janacek\" in=\"\" the=\"\" mists=\"\" width=\"&quot;200&quot;\" height=\"&quot;150&quot;\" src=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9m5oVNFlKnc?feature=oembed&quot;\" frameborder=\"&quot;0&quot;\" allow=\"&quot;accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" web-share=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<p class=\"&quot;p1&quot;\">Various critics have detected the influence of the French, so-called \u2018impressionist\u2019 composers in this set of solo piano works, not least in their mysterious, dreamlike atmosphere and vivid use of harmonic colour. But this is unmistakably <strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/leos-janacek\/&quot;\">Jan\u00e1\u010dek<\/a><\/strong>: emotionally turbulent, rhythmically unpredictable \u2013 even improvisational, with a folk-infused sound world poised on the boundary between eastern and western Europe. Mozart\u2019s Piano Sonatas<\/h3>\n<p class=\"&quot;p1&quot;\">They may not quite plumb the same emotional depths as Beethoven, but Mozart\u2019s piano sonatas \u2013 written between 1774 and 1789 \u2013 offer a snapshot of a phenomenal musical talent, and one that was never more at home than in dramatic music for the stage: each of his piano sonatas are like mini operas, their surface grace belying their internal drama.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p1&quot;\">Each tells its own story, each is populated with dynamic characters that engage in, often passionate, dialogue. And each is a window into <strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/who-was-the-real-mozart-we-explore-the-man-behind-the-myths\/&quot;\">Mozart\u2019s character<\/a><\/strong>, reminding us that this was someone who could push boundaries, without violating them, and who could pack a sense of mischief into music of the utmost elegance and grace. Most popular among them is the Piano Sonata No. 11 in<span class=\"&quot;Apple-converted-space&quot;\">\u00a0 <\/span>major, K.331, often referred to as the \u2018Alla Turca\u2019, but there are 17 other numbered piano sonatas to choose from, so get listening!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>8. <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/best-recordings-debussys-images\/&quot;\">Debussy\u2019s<em> Images<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<iframe title=\"&quot;Claude\" debussy:=\"\" images=\"\" i=\"\" danae=\"\" d=\"\" width=\"&quot;200&quot;\" height=\"&quot;113&quot;\" src=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rp8T9INXeok?feature=oembed&quot;\" frameborder=\"&quot;0&quot;\" allow=\"&quot;accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" web-share=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<p class=\"&quot;p1&quot;\">Reflecting <strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/claude-debussy\/&quot;\">Debussy<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s fascination with the relationship between sight and sound, this masterpiece was visionary in the way it effectively transformed the ear into an eye, creating musical swirls of iridescent colour through its inventive pianistic techniques and blurred harmonic focus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p1&quot;\">On finishing his first series of <i>Images<\/i>, in 1905, Debussy wrote to his publisher, Jacques Durand: \u2018Without false pride, I feel that these three pieces hold together well and that they will find their place in the literature of the piano\u2026 to the left of Schumann, or to the right of Chopin.\u2019 He was not wrong.<\/p>\n<h3>9. Liszt\u2019s Piano Sonata in B minor<\/h3>\n<p class=\"&quot;p1&quot;\">\u2018This is nothing but sheer racket\u2026it\u2019s really awful,\u2019 wrote Clara Schumann on first hearing Liszt\u2019s B minor sonata. And yet, of Liszt\u2019s many, many great piano pieces, this ogre of a sonata, written to no conventional structural design, is generally acknowledged to be his masterpiece, its very complexity one of the main reasons why it is so well loved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p1&quot;\">Some have suggested that it offers a musical portrait of the Faust legend. Others have argued that its wild, intense contrasts mirror the conflicts in <strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/franz-liszt\/&quot;\">Liszt<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s own personality.
