On 5 July 2023, Their Majesties King Charles and Queen Camilla are presented with the Royal Honours of Scotland. Effectively, this is a second, Scottish Coronation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Is there a Coronation in Scotland?<\/h2>\n
The service, held in St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, and has centuries of history behind it. It dates back, in fact, to 1633, when King Charles I was given a Scottish coronation as well as the traditional Westminster Abbey ceremony. This was a sign that the King reigned over Scotland, as well as England.<\/p>\n
Is the Scottish Coronation similar to the Westminster Abbey ceremony?<\/h3>\n
There are quite a few similarities between the two Coronations.<\/p>\n
Charles\u2019s Coronation: what music was played at the Coronation of King Charles III?<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>
As at Westminster, for example, there will be a pre-service procession. This will consist of a People\u2019s Procession, and a Royal Procession, in which you\u2019ll see the pipe and drums bands and the Household Cavalry. Then comes the coronation itself, officially named a National Service of Thanksgiving; and, finally, a Gun Salute at the end of the day\u2019s events.<\/p>\n\nThe National Service of Thanksgiving will feature music by a raft of well-known Scottish performers including violinist <a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/recordings\/nicola-benedetti-who-she-is-and-her-best-recordings\/"\">Nicola Benedetti<\/a><\/strong> and classical-crossover duo <a href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/news\/jan-willem-de-with-ayoub-sisters-release-video-for-help-musicians-charity\/"\">The Ayoub Sisters<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul><li><a Paul\u2019s piece for the Coronation was the first-ever Welsh language performance at a British Coronation, and it was sung by the great Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel.<\/p>\n<ul><li><a class=\""standard-card-newarticle-title"\" href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/who-is-performing-at-the-coronation\/"\">Who performed at the Coronation?<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>Next, after a reading from the Old Testament by Scotland\u2019s First Minister Humza Yousaf, we will hear another Paul Mealor composition: a musical setting of the Gaelic Psalm And I Shall Dwell in God\u2019s House<\/em>, sung by Scottish broadcaster and singer Joy Dunlop.<\/p>\nThe next musical item will be a performance of \u2018Soay\u2019, a traditional Scottish tune arranged by Rebecca Dale and played on the violin by Nicola Benedetti.<\/p>\n<ul><li><a class=\""standard-card-newarticle-title"\" href=\""https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/articles\/who-composed-music-for-king-charless-coronation\/"\">Who composed music for King Charles\u2019s Coronation?<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>The last brand new commission that you\u2019ll hear is A Song of Thanksgiving and Dedication <\/em>by composer Joanna Gill. This will be performed by Karen Cargill, a Scottish mezzo-soprano and Patron of the National Youth Choir of Scotland National Girls\u2019 Choir. Karen will be accompanied by The Ayoub Sisters.<\/p>\nFinally, we will hear Ye banks and braes<\/em>, a traditional song with words by Robert Burns, arranged by John Kitchen, and performed by the National Youth Choir of Scotland Chamber Choir and conductor Mark Evans.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\""heading-subtitle"\">What music will be played after the Scottish Coronation service?<\/h2>\nAs the Coronation service finishes, you\u2019ll hear a Recessional played by the Honours of Scotland Ensemble and the Fanfare Trumpeters of the Royal Air Force. That will be followed by another Paul Mealor composition, a march entitled\u00a0The Call of Lochnagar. <\/em>Finally, the organ will play out the ceremony with Elgar\u2019s Pomp and Circumstance March No. 4<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>Can I watch the Scottish Coronation on TV?<\/h2>\nYes. Charles and Camilla\u2019s Scottish\u00a0Coronation will be broadcast on BBC One on Wednesday, 5 July from 1.30pm until 3.45pm.
