Here\u2019s our ranking\u2026 <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Michael Beek\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Monday, 10 July 2023 at 12:00 am<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body> <p style=\"&quot;font-weight:\"><strong>It\u2019s 42 years since Harrison Ford first cracked his whip, going on to star in a further four big-screen adventures as Henry \u2018Indiana\u2019 Jones, Jr. With him for every step, jump and chase has been composer <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/composers\/williams-john\/&quot;\">John Williams<\/a>, who has turned in some of his most memorable music for the fedora-wearing hero. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">With a new score just released, we thought we\u2019d line up all five and see which of them is the very best.<\/p>\n<h2>The Indiana Jones film scores ranked worst to best<\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"&quot;font-weight:\"><strong>No. 5:<\/strong> <strong>Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull<\/strong> (2008)<\/h3>\n<p>The fourth film in the franchise, released some 19 years after the third instalment, was the Indiana Jones sequel nobody knew they needed\u2026 and many still believe they don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>The passage of 15 years has been kind to Steven Spielberg\u2019s relative misfire, though, when looked at for what it is and what works well. Cate Blanchett\u2019s angular bob steals the show, as does a brilliant John Hurt and so what if Indy survives a nuclear blast by hiding in a fridge and ends up seeing a UFO?<\/p>\n<section class=\"&quot;highlight\"> <div class=\"&quot;highlight__content\" editor-content=\"\"> \n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.classical-music.com\/features\/tv-and-film-music\/tar-cate-blanchett-on-portraying-a-conductor-in-new-psychodrama\/&quot;\">T\u00e1r: Cate Blanchett on portraying a conductor in new psychodrama<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> <\/p><\/div> <\/section> <p>It\u2019s all fantasy after all\u2026 John Williams never does any film score by half, and so <em>Crystal Skull<\/em> is more than a solid effort, with new themes for Indy and Marion\u2019s son \u2018Mutt\u2019, an enthralling musical moniker for Blanchett\u2019s villain, Irina, and a natty little mysterious motif for the eponymous Crystal Skull itself.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"&quot;font-weight:\"><strong>No. 4<\/strong> <strong>Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny<\/strong> (2023)<\/h3>\n<p style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">Spielberg stepped aside for the fifth and final (?) Indiana Jones adventure, serving as exec producer, while James Mangold took the director\u2019s chair.<\/p>\n<p style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">It\u2019s a worthy sequel, with Indy recognising he is far too old to be racing around the world digging up antiquities, when he is close to becoming one himself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">Thrills and spills are present and correct, plus an unexpected amount of pathos and emotion for a hero who is, after all, only human. John Williams digs deep for what might be his very last full film score, tipping his hat to the past and conjuring 90-odd minutes of new, big-boned orchestral music and some brilliant set pieces. \u2018Helena\u2019s Theme\u2019 is the real treat, though, up there with the very best of the composer\u2019s most sweeping music.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"&quot;font-weight:\"><strong>No. 3 Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">What was once the middle chapter of a trilogy, proved controversial upon its release \u2013 even director Steven Spielberg apparently regrets just how dark he went with <em>Temple of Doom<\/em>. It\u2019s true that, seen against the high-octane and thoroughly entertaining curtain-raiser that was <em>Raiders<\/em>, this film (actually a prequel) leads us into some decidedly murky territory \u2013 voodoo, the occult, enslaved children, monkey brains for dessert, the list goes on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">For Williams it presented the opportunity to scare the pants off of us, and he does with the terrifying music for the occult ceremony. But there is heart, too (and not just the one pulled out of that poor guy\u2019s chest), plus romance and humour in Williams\u2019s music for Short Round and Willie Scott (\u2018Anything Goes\u2019 in Mandarin, anyone?), plus he delivers classic action set pieces, such as the \u2018Mine Car Chase\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">Oh and \u2018Parade of the Slave Children\u2019 (the concert version of his music for the chained-up kids) is probably one of the composer\u2019s most overlooked themes; it\u2019s a cracker.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"&quot;font-weight:\"><strong>No. 2<\/strong> <strong>Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade<\/strong> (1989)<\/h3>\n<p style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">The third Indiana Jones film is like stepping out into the light and taking a big breath of air after a visit to the <em>Temple of Doom<\/em>. <em>Last Crusade<\/em> is a return to form for all concerned, with Indy up against his old Nazi foes on a whirlwind adventure to rescue his father (a resplendent Sean Connery) and get his hands on the Holy Grail.<\/p>\n<p style=\"&quot;font-weight:\">John Williams seemingly went at this score with a huge amount of vigour, turning in a rich variety of themes and some wild and wonderful action pieces \u2013 for what was his first big adventure score in a few years.
