The children of Jewish composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein insist that their father would have approved of actor Bradley Cooper’s decision to wear a prosthetic nose for his starring role in the Netflix film <\/p>

Leonard Bernstein<\/a><\/strong>\u2018s children have defended Bradley Cooper after the actor was criticised for wearing a prosthetic nose in Maestro<\/em><\/a><\/strong>, his new biopic about the late Jewish composer-conductor\u2019s life.<\/p>\n

In the trailer for the Netflix<\/a><\/strong> film, which was released earlier this week, Cooper was seen with a significantly larger nose than his real one, prompting some social media users to accuse him of playing up to offensive Jewish stereotypes.<\/p>\n\n<p>The British actress and activist Tracy-Ann Oberman, who is Jewish, claimed this was \u2018the equivalent of black-face or yellow-face\u2019, writing on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tracyanno\/\">Instagram<\/a><\/strong> that if Cooper was chosen over a \u2018Jewish A-lister who can equally play that role\u2019 then his acting should be \u2018so magnificent and truthful that the character of Bernstein shines through what he already looks like\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>When photos from the set emerged in May, the <em>Hollywood Reporter<\/em>\u2019s chief TV critic Daniel Fienberg called the prosthetics \u2018problematic\u2019 and subsequently described the film as \u2018ethnic cosplay\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LennyBernstein\/status\/1691818410273869854?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1691818410273869854%7Ctwgr%5E76226bd85e6ac0a38e846a9bfa78042d0b240bb7%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fpeople.com%2Fembed%3Furl%3Dhttps3A2F2Ftwitter.com2Flennybernstein2Fstatus2F1691818410273869854id%3Dmntl-sc-block_1-0-10-iframeoptions%3De303DdocId%3D7644128\">posted online<\/a><\/strong>, however, Jamie, Alexander and Nina Bernstein wrote: \u2018It breaks our hearts to see any misrepresentations or misunderstandings of [Cooper\u2019s] efforts.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It happens to be true that Leonard Bernstein had a nice, big nose,\u2019 they said. \u2018Bradley chose to use make-up to amplify his resemblance, and we\u2019re perfectly fine with that.
